Scope bottoms out before sighted in

Hey there
I put a heavy barrel on my stevens 200, which required me to get extra high bases. So i installed the new bases, bore sighted the rifle, and the left right bottomed out before i got to center. i double checked it on paper, and sure enough at 100 yards i was still 3" right of the center when my L R bottomed.
Any ideas or tricks for what i should do next?? Maybe return the bases and try another set??

You have a few options. You can buy Burris Signiture Zee rings with posi-lign kit which will give you something like 20 extra inches of windage. I had to do this with my Remington VSSF II. Or you can buy the windage adjustable Leupold bases.
I prefer the Burris Sig zee as the grip the scope better, no need to lap the rings and it protects the finish on the scope.
Id count your windage clicks and go dead center then use the posi-lign kit to get you centered best as possible then fine tune with clicks.

The bases need to be identical, the same height front and rear.

The rings need to be the same height front and rear.
 
One thing you could try quick and easy is do what I did and see if I was turning the thingies the wrong way. I dont know about other people, but I always forget which way to turn to make the poi go up...or is it the poa...? See, they mark the turrets just to confuse people.
 
If the bases are not identical, it may cause an issue. If the elevation is not correct the objective lens could be sitting on the barrel and forced to one side, especially with windage adjustable rings.

Some rings are solid on one side and move on the other. Some rings move on both sides.

Seeing how the OP left no information it's hard to be specific.
 
A) check your bases against what the factory says they should be
b) check where the bases are sitting, make sure there are no burrs or anything that causes one to sit high/low
c)try a different scope with the bases, or a different scope with the old bases
d)make sure bases are not backwards (ie front on the rear)
e) check rings
 
Both bases are correct and the same. They are extra high weaver bases with rings. I've tried switching them front to back, and still my left to right is bottoming before getting to center. I'm thinking i'll return those and try some Burris signature Zee rings. The yotes are runnin around here and i gotta get this gun back in commision
 
I am assuming you had no trouble until you put the new barrel on.Therefore it would stand to reason it isn't threaded straight.You could save yourself some aggravation and get millet mounts or a mount which can correct this by simply adjusting the mount.
 
Use a windage adjustable base or Burris Signature rings as stated. If it is oyur left/right affected, then these should correct it.

Move (by whatever adjustment you are using) the pointing of the scope physically to where the holes are appearing in the target.

Say you find and use the Burris rings - I think the +10moa fat plastic insert placed on the left side of the front ring and the corresponding -10moa skinny insert on the right side of the front ring will do it.

Just use the 0/0 in the rear ring.

if you need more adjustment, use the 20moa inserts in the front - you are trying to push the front of the scope over to the right to compensate for the difference in the bbl threading.

If you use windage adjustable Leupold bases - use the windage at the rear base to move the back end of the scope to the left.
 
Barrel is threaded on properly. With the oldrings I sited it in after the barrel swap but the scope was touching the barrel and leaving marks which is why I bought higher Rings . I'll try those burris

What I mean is it isn't straight because the threads weren't cut dead straight in the first place. This is not uncommon.
