Scope Break in Question

It'll take you YEARS to get copper out with hoppes 9 copper - it's a very mild solvent, more of a preventative measure than anything else

Get some KG-2. The stuff is better than JB's. Cleaned my previously cleand rifles with it and was amazed at what came out. And I am meticulous at cleaning:eek: . Well worth the money to try.

At this point, it's important to remember we're laughing WITH you, not at you :)

Except maynard - he's laughing at you a bit. :D

That should definately help, keep it up till you get it perfect.

Foxer, I would not laugh at someones elses misfortune--- well maybe I would.

I ran into a fouling problem just last week and had to clean my barrel. It only had 260 rounds through it but the groups opened up. I was a little amazed that there was copper fouling as the barrel has never see a naked bullet. Moly only from the first round.

7.62, see if you can find some Rem-Clean bore cleaner. If you use a good penetrating oil like Kroil, wet patch it, let it sit for 10 minutes then dry patch it and go at it again with Rem-Clean. After using it for a while it seems to smooth out the bore a bit and makes cleaning much easier. At least that is what I found before switching to Moly bullets a few years back. Get a good one piece cleaning rod and a pierce jag of the correct caliber. I prefer the pierce jags over the wrap around style, you can use the pierce jag as a wrap around style so it gives you the option of either way. The patch should fit snug down the barrel, but not tight. I use a one piece Dewey rod and a pierce style jag with CP2 patches from Sinclair International.
In my opinion cleaning is over rated until you run into problems like you are having. After you get it clean, see how many rounds it takes before the groups open up.

I recommend barnes cr-10 copper remover..... I can't believe t took you 48 patches to get it clean.....

with cr-10 3-5 patches and then a dry patch r two and then a couple of oiled patches and your done.

Just thought I would do an update. I called a friend of mine, and he just happened to have a bottle of cr-10 that he had hardly used. I ran a few patches through with that, with a little scubbing in between, and managed to get more copper out. I think I finally have it clean.

Went to the range today, and got a decent group for factory ammo, with the rifle supported on the forstock. 140 GR. winchester soft points @ 100 yds:

Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys. I was just about ready to go out and buy a new scope, which wouldn't have been the end of the world, like who here doesn't need an extra scope or two lying around. May just buy another anyway, cause I can.

A suggestion is keep shooting that same ammo for another 4 groups. it might surprise you that the groups suddenly shrink after the bore gets fouled.

There is a fine balance between cleaning enough and having the bore fouled out.

Most bores do not like being spotlessly clean.

Remember the cleaning must do: Clean till the patches are white - no copper no powder fouling, then take a few fouling shots before shooting for accuracy.

Well, what do you think is going on in the bore those first few shots.

Best accuracy usually occurs when a few rds have been down the bore.
