Scope caps, are they really that important?

A lot of my scoped guns don't have scope caps on. Perhaps the scope didn't come with one, or the scope is mounted too low to get them on, or the rear sight gets in the way. The only real advantages I see is to keep the rain or snow off, avoiding dust and fingerprints, and perhaps prevent some condensation. Of course this means cleaning them more. Not sure if this is the right stuff to use but I usually use the same soft tissue, and fluids meant for cleaning eye glasses.

Butler Creek flip-ups are must for hunting, providing cheap insurance for your scope.

For cleaning, blow off any big particles then use a light brush to blow off any dust. Then use camera lens tissues to clean. Camera shops have lots of good cleaning options.
