A lot of my scoped guns don't have scope caps on. Perhaps the scope didn't come with one, or the scope is mounted too low to get them on, or the rear sight gets in the way. The only real advantages I see is to keep the rain or snow off, avoiding dust and fingerprints, and perhaps prevent some condensation. Of course this means cleaning them more. Not sure if this is the right stuff to use but I usually use the same soft tissue, and fluids meant for cleaning eye glasses.
