Hey guys, this is kind of a re-post from the Precision Rifles forum...but I'm thinking I maybe should have posted this question here. Looking for some advice...

A few weeks back, I bought a new Savage Precision 10 Carbine in .223, and a barely-used Millett TRS-1 scope. The fellow who sold me the scope had medium rings for it (Millett brand) so once I had new bases, I figured I'd be set. I spoke with Jerry from Mystic Precision, who suggested Burris XTB steel, and indeed, these seem to be great bases for the price. Mounted everything, only to find the objective end of the scope floating 3/8" off of the barrel which to my eye/sensibilities, seemed too high. "Easy" I thought, so I bought some Millett "low" rings locally and set it all-up again, only to find the scope as close to the barrel as it could be w/o touching it. You need to hold it up to the light to see it's not.

So, without a sunshade, no scope cap of any kind (especially the cruddy Millett ones) work. Because the barrel is tapered, when you add the sun shade, there is almost (but probably less) than 1/16" clearance between the scope and the barrel. Not enough to use Butler Creek (which I want to do) and certainly, NO scope cap if I take the sun shade off~which I'd like the option of doing.

So, I'd like to gain 1/8" height with the scope, and not grow my collection of bases/rings too much more. :) Any ideas? How much height does a 10 MOA base add to the scope? I know there are some 1-pc. bases out there that offer this. Are there ring makers (30mm) who sell an option somewhere between Millett's "low" and "medium" height...or am I over-thinking this and should go back and use the medium ones?

Thanks for taking a moment to respond.

****BTW~the Millett front cap on there has it's bottom ground flat to shoe-horn it on.

:runaway:

Your gonna give yourself an ulcer thinking about this soo much. LOL

A tapered(10 or 20 MOA) scope base actually angles the scope down slightly in the front. They will be higher than the 2 piece bases you are using over the action but might not give you the extra height needed overall. You would really have to try them out and see where the scope is gonna sit, and they are gonna cost some cash.

If I was you I would just go with the new rings, as it seems that is what you are leaning towards anyways.

Not all manufacturers use the same measurements for their rings so try a few different ones out if you can.

Shim the rings a little?

I've done it several times to great success in similar situations. (Usually just to get the bell to clear the barrel though)

It's not your eye/sensibilities that's important here, it's how the rifle scope combo fits you. when you shoulder the rifle and have your cheek in place on the stock. Your eye should be centered in the scope, and you should have a full sight picture. This usually requires an adjustable cheek piece, and judicius placement of the scope front to back, depending if you are shooting prone or from the bench.
You may find when you do this the 3/8 clearance is good, and everything is sweetness and light.
