Looking to aquire a basic scope for a vintage Ruger 22. I'm guessing something around $300-400 would be good enough to shoot rabbits. It has iron sights but would like to upgrade. Any thoughts on cheap but durable and waterproof scopes?

For a .22LR scope for rabbits, a variable power scope with 2x-7x or 3x-9x magnification is ideal for ranges from 20-100 yards. Look for a scope with a 50-yard zero, which makes aiming at targets up to 100 yards simpler, or consider models with adjustable parallax or a custom reticle for more precise adjustments at different distances.

I got my 10/22 for Christmas way back in the early 80s, and I've always had a fixed 4X scope on it. (Weaver Classic Rimfire) I might be old fashioned, but so is my 10/22 lol. I've shot countless ground squirrels, jack rabbits, and a few badgers over the years with this, and based on the accuracy of a stock 10/22, I've never felt like I needed much more magnification. Personally I like the smaller size and simplicity of this kind of set up, plus I'm only using this gun for pest control and casual plinking. For game the size of a rabbit, this would be good for the effective range of a 22lr hunting round.

I've always liked the 2-7 magnification for a utility rimfire.
Though pricey, I find the Leupold 2-7x33 rimfire model fills my checklist.

I would look at the burris fullfield 2-8×35. Comes in a few reticle options and can be illuminated. Right around $300. Made in the Phillipines not China. They are under 10" so very nice and compact and would suit a 10/22 nicely. I think im going to order one for my cva scout.

I'd lean towards a 1x red dot sight. Yeah, they need batteries, but you're not likely going to be making a 150 yard shot on a rabbit.

Tasco Worldclass 3-9x40 for $100 at Cabelas.

We ran a pair of these scopes on our gopher rifles for 20 years and they work fantastic. I ended up buying a brand new one last month and still excellent quality at an amazing price.

LOADS of people will look down on these scopes because they are inexpensive but my personal and long time experience with this scope is that they are durable and reliable. I've killed gophers at 200+ yds with this scope.

^^ And you are certain that the Tasco World Class scope that you buy today (probably made in China) is the same as the Tasco World Class scope that was made in Japan when Tanross owned the Tasco brand? I think since original owner sold the brand, various entities like Bushnell, Wind Point Partners, Meade, ATK and others have owned it.

I’ve got a Japanese-made Bushnell straight-tube scope on my 10-22. It’s a fixed 4x. Perfect for rabbits out to about 50m.

A variable scope up to about 7 power would be better for longer shots, but new production scopes in that price range are pretty bulky.

Not necessary anyway. I find rabbits will let you walk right up to them. If they dart, give a LOUD whistle. Sounds silly, but they freeze in their tracks.

P.S. vintage Japanese Tasco scopes are good too. No need to spend more than $50 on a scope for a rimfire hunting rifle. IMO.

Another for for a Weaver 4x, all you need for rabbits with that Ruger. If you had a more accurate rifle I'd go for a more powerful scope.

Shepherd 22 rifle scopes are in your price range, have ranging reticles out past 300 yds.

Just highlight the Shepherd Rugged series 22 scopes for pics of the reticle and scope

I have one on my Tikka T1X. Love it.

The Shepherd Rugged™ Series has been designed to endure virtually any tactical weapon system or environment there is. Added strength to the turret assemblies, lens retainers, and interior support systems allow these scopes to take any punishment that the terrain or weapon can dish out without adding weight. As with all Shepherd Scopes, we use the best extra-low dispersion glass to synchronize colors and focus wavelengths for the brightest and clearest sight picture possible.

The 3-9×40 Rugged Scope has a one piece 30mm tube, ¼ MOA per click turrets, locking adjustable eyepiece, and a bullet drop compensating front focal plane (FFP) reticle. The scopes are nitrogen purged to prevent fogging and waterproof up to one meter. No matter what environment you’re shooting in, you can shoot faster and farther with Shepherd!

The reticle in the Rugged 3-9×40 has drops for multiple calibers combined into one reticle. From 400 yards to 1000 yards there are 18” (at range) horizontal lines for flatter trajectories and 9” lines for bullets with more drop. There are also ½ MOA Dots out to 600 yards for .223/5.56.

6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, 300 Win Mag, .308, 30-06, 338 Win Mag are just some of the calibers that will work on the R-22 reticle. Compare your bullet drops to the reticle drop figures below. Combine this scope with Shepherd’s Cradle Mount to quickly and easily move the scope from one rifle to another.
