Scope for .375 ruger african

Well, just to throw a hat into the ring, here's one more vote for a Leupold VX-III 1.75-6x (in real magnification terms, I believe the specs are 1.5-5.5x). Myself, I think the 20mm objectives just aren't as bright, say what you will regarding the measurement of the exit pupil. I've looked through a VX-III 1.5-5x and a 1.75-6x side-by-side late in the day, and the latter scope was noticeably brighter at the same power setting. Not a ton brighter, but enough to notice.

At the higher end of the magnification setting, that should be enough to place your shot well on a target 300 yards away. As Dogleg already pointed out, beyond 300 it's probably time to call it a day or figure out how to get closer.

While I'm going to agree with He-Who-Blows-Up-M14s :p that a VXIII 3.5-10x is about the perfect all-around hunting scope, I'm just not sold on it for a .375. For me, at least, on a rifle has enough juice to push you around some, it's a heck of a lot easier to recover for a follow-on shot when the magnification level is lower. That said, I can't think of anything I'll ever be doing with a .375 where a reasonably bright 6x view just isn't enough.

Neo,
I could take a pretty good stab at using anything from a 1.75-6 to a 3.5-10 on any general purpose hunting rifle. The spontaniously disassembling M14 affair, well that's a whole 'nuther thing.:D

gunrunner8,
So does a 3.5-40 X40. With that combination I was able to put a serious hurt on a couple of elephant last summer, and never once wished I had a straight tubed lower powered scope. I never turned it below 4 either.
.
Dogleg; I have no African hunting experience. Still, take it, my friendly addvice, or leave it. Hunting elephants with 3,5x10x40mm variable scope ( Leupold or else ) on heavy rifle, is in my opinion, asking for trouble. In 1995, I was moose hunting, north of Prince George, about 800k from my house, with 2x7 Leupold on top my 358NM. Guess what? I had scope failure! No open sites either.Next to go, was 2x7 Nikon, on that rifle, another, faster failure, this time on the shooting range! So far, my 2,5x Burris fullfield, is still going strong, after 12 years, and You would never call it optical POS, if You had one. It is the same scope, as Pentax Lightseeker. ER- 3,75", FOV- 55'at 100yds. Yours 29' FOV, is on the low side in my opinion. Would You decline easy shot on moose (or zebra), with open sites at 100yds? 2,5x scope extends that to 250yds and then somme. One more thing; if something nasty jumps on You from, let say 20 yds, You are stuck on whatever power the scope is on, and no time to use QD rings either!

Gunnrunner8,
I never said that I used a 3.5-10 elephant hunting. I said that it wouldn't have made any difference. My 1.75 -6 stayed on 4 except when I shot a couple impala with it at 6.
Like many other people I shoot with both eyes open even with scopes. FOV doesn't mean much when you are using both eyes.
The first Leupold I put on my .375 lasted 2000 rounds before I decided to give it a semi-retirement on a muzzleloader and stick a new one on the .375. Nothing wrong with it that I can detect, but scopes are cheap and trips are expensive. I don't think of the .375 as a heavy rifle, just an overgrown 30-06 with the same trajectory, plus the benefits of being legal for anything. Still, if something wants to pop up 20 feet, that's its problem.;)

Really though, what have we come to that we need more than 9 power on a general big game rifle? Not that it's wrong, but you don't need it to do the job unless you're into taking real long shots or shootign real small things. And last time I checked, LR duiker hunting hadn't caught on.

Scope

I was fortunate enough to have just purchased an African Ruger 375 and am anxiously awaiting its arrival!! I am also considering which scope to put on it. I love the lower magnification VX3's and own a few. Unfortunately my rifle will never see Africa and I don't plan on hunting dangerous game.

However, I love to do a bit of target shooting, load development and some sitting for moose, bear, dear, etc. So a 1.5-5x20, although a great scope,
probably will not go on mine. I want something with a bit more magnification. I will more than likely put a 2.5-8 on mine. I might even try a 1.75-6 if one comes available. I know these guns come with rings, but a set of Warne QR rings would really look sweet on that rig!!
