Scope for .458 win mag?

Seven pound rifle, lots of go-go powder in a 458 win mag project. Need a scope (now that I'm broke) in the $4-800 range, 2.5-10x range preferably that won't start shaking under the abuse

I put a 2.5-8 VX3 on my M70 .458. 10 buffalo with that one so far; nothing broke.

458 should be a <200 yard rifle and to me the wider field of view is far more important than high magnification on dangerous game unless you prepare to use it on varmint during off season

A nice 2300fps 450 grain hollow point ammo on a groundhog should get the littl bugger killed, skinned, cooked and burried in one step. Basically vaporize the little bugger with no mess left to clean up. It's a win win

75 grains is lots of powder?

I'd go with a 1.5-5x Leupold. I like the 2.5-8x but I believe it is more scope than a 458 requires. The 458 isn't designed to reach out like the 375 H&H. Besides, 5x is lots of scope.

Actually, no...you'll be surprised at how little damage it will do to a groundhog. A .45-caliber entrance, a .45-caliber exit. Those slugs are designed for buffalo and elephants...they whistle through little critters like groundhogs...or deer...without even noticing them.

They do, however, launch a groundhog so high, and so far, often with so many cartwheels before they land, that you will not stop smiling for a week.

Forget the scopes that go up to 10x. A perfect scope would be a Leupold 1-4x20mm or 1.5-5x20mm. Well within your budget, tough enough to last on that gun, more than enough accuracy for the ranges you will be shooting and plenty of eye relief to help you avoid brow booboos.
