Scope for 81 BLR

Hi Guys,

Need some advice on a recent gunnutz purchase, a beautiful old 1990 Browning BLR 308 straight stock. Not sure what scope to buy?

Cheers Rob

Depends what you are looking for your scope to do for you. I put a Vortex Diamondback 3-9 x 40 on mine and it does exactly what I want it to do. It was 300 bucks and it's got a lifetime warranty. I have other Vortex scopes and am very happy with them. I do have other rifles I use for heavy bush though so if that's what you're after maybe a lower power scope.

Fixed power on mine(6X) , it is a perfect match.

I wanted simple and basic and rugged and that is what I got with my BLR.

I have a dislike for Browning and Leupold but I grab this rifle more than any other to chase game.

Funny thing is, it has more coyote kills than big game.

And the damn thing is a 7mm WSM.

Sometimes you just gotta wonder!

Fixed Leupold M8 6x on my 81 in .243Win. Seems like a nice fit

Because of the rapid "fall-off" of the chamber swell on short action BLR's you can get a belled objective scope mounted very low as seen on the bottom rifle... sona straight tube scope is not necessarily the only option for a low mounted scope.

Please excuse the red dot on the BLR .308, that was set up for my father, who has very poor vision, for deer season and will be replaced with the traditional VX-3 2.5-8.

No need to excuse the choice of optic hoyt, different strokes for different folks.
If it means putting a site on there that allows Dad to continue hunting then thats fine by me.
Adds character...

Don't take off the red dot! Add a vertical grip and a flashlight. Totally bad ass, then.

Also, I have a vx-2 1-4. Got it on sale.

I wanted to keep the irons. No, I can't explain why.

The irons are so low that nice warne bases obscured the sight picture, and I had to use el-cheapo weavers.

It's a takedown 308, and i just don't like scout scopes.

Trijicon 1-4x24 accupoint - Light, huge field of view, triangle post reticle. I also like the leuopld 1-4x 20mm but this is the next step up.

IMO, it depends on what you will be using it for,.. if you are walking/stalking in tight cover I would go with a Red Dot,.. if you are sitting still or hunting in fairly open country I would go with a Leupold VX2 2-7x33,.. I have a Redfeild 2-7x33 on a pistol grip BLR mounted as low as can get it and it fits very well..

Hoytcanon,....I don't think there is any reason to excuse a Red Dot on a BLR,.... I think that the BLR with a red dot is a deadly combination for hunting/walking/stalking in close cover. I recently bought a 284win and decided to put a red dot on it and I have taken a couple nice bucks with it while hunting thicker cover..

My son in this pic... a very special day he or I will never forget

I have used a red dot on quite a few rifles over the years for walking/stalking and I love them.
