I recently acquired a barret m99 and need to put a scope on it. I own two scopes already and was wondering if they would be up to the task for the 50
the first scope is a nightforce 4x16 56mm SHV and the other is a Trijicon Accupower 2x10 56 mm
Does anyone know if these scopes would handle the recoil of the 50? or am I better off just getting a nightforce nxs and be done with it?
I don't want to use the SHV or accupower if they will end up getting destroyed by the recoil, they are currently in use on other rifles but can use one on the 50 and replace with something else if they will work ok
Any other recommendations for a decent scope?

Check manufacturers for 50 BMG rated scopes. Not all are.

I think a Vortex Razor should hold up, but I had a Vortex Viper only last 750 rounds and then the turret literally just fell off.

Currently I have a (discontinued) Leupold target 30mm tube in ATRS rings that hasn't changed zero in about 2000 rounds. Rings are going to be very important.

I wouldn't be scared of a SWFA fixed power scope either, I have a couple and they are known for being quite robust.

I'm not going to be shooting huge distances, maybe 500 yards or so, won't need a big power scope
Never been a fan of vortex but their warranty is definitely something to consider

I would suggest a mount like Spuhr or Near. Cheap rings will not hold up and will damage your scope. When I had my a M99 I used a S&B 3-20x50 mounted in a Spuhr.

Leupold has the same warranty. If I was you I would buy a Schmidt and Bender PMII 5-25X50

50 cal for under 2000 yards? Shooting 500 or less? Oookkkkaaayyyyyy...........

Me and the Bossman like to invite oilfield personal from companies we work for to go shooting every once and a while
Not many have experienced the thrill of shooting a fifty so this is the main purpose of this Barrett m99
You can still have fun with a fifty shooting at closer ranges too :)

The scope is 4 to 20 magnification with a 50 mm objective
The only thing I don't like about it is that it uses 34 mm rings and they are expensive!

I would also think about eye relief with the 50. Especially since you are going to let unknown shooters fire it. Pretty sure hurting somebody wouldn't be a good thing. They are a lot of gun to control. Totally agree with quality ring suggestion! Have fun!

lol, you are shooting a barret 50cal, and your concern is the cost of 34mm rings??? lol

but in all seriousness, get GOOD rings. If anything, they need to stand up tot he recoil and hold the scope solidly. even if the scope doesn't brake, it's not fun to burn through ammo troubleshooting poor accuracy only to find out the rings are shooting loose. that wastes a lot of money with a 50.

Fyi I found the buttstock uncomfortable to shoot from a prone position so I had a machine shop build me a spacer that added two inches length and moved the recoil pad up two inches.

The buttstock doesn't seem too bad to me but I shoot left and am wondering if there is a way to add some padding or maybe a cheek rest to it somehow

The cost of the rings are nothing, when the main cost of any 50bmg is feeding it.

On mine i have decided to go with a Leupold VX-3i LRP 8.5 - 25 x 50 in a set of Burris XTR high height rings. I am really hoping this holds zero otherwise its back to the drawing board.
