Scope for a basic hunting rifle

You know, JonSCB, the more I think about your opening post, the more I think you could hardly do better then a good fixed 4 power Leupold, Bushnell, or Burris with a duplex reticle.

All three are tough as nails, and have optics that are more than adequate for any hunting you are likely to be doing with your 308 rifle.

Quoted for truth!! Will not be gizmos to twirl and "adjust" for each shot - get it sighted in, and go shoot stuff. I have taken game with fixed 2.5, fixed 3, fixed 4 and fixed 6 power scopes - about fooling one's self to believe that you need a variable power scope to hunt with. Learn about "Kentucky windage and elevation" - forget the "twirling the turrets" or adjusting magnification stuff - just go out and shoot with it!!

I like a good fix 4 with German 4 reticle!
Bushnell 3200, Leupold rifleman, Leupold M8 these are all great scope for a low price!

Great. I was actually looking at the exact same Burris scope yesterday.

Just be aware that a Fullfield IV supports PRC. At least the E1’s are made in Philippines. Looks like they are discontinuing them though. Go figure. A used elite is a good buy. Same with used Fullfield II or E1 by Burris:

If you can find a Bushnell Elite 3200 etc. You won't look back.

Bushnell 3500 elite. Japanese glass, lifetime warranty, reliable and only $300.

I've got one on the EE right now as it so happens.

Bushnell Elite all the way. The newer models are made in Korea, I have both older Japanese scopes and the newer Korean 4500. No issues with any of them. I have a few Burris scopes and have been disappointed with their service /warranty.

+1. on the elite scopes for the price hard to beat.

Lots of good advice already. Make sure you budget for decent rings and bases, if you can't use the ones you have.

At the 200-300 price point, it's hard to beat Bushnell. If you're very hard on equipment, maybe Vortex instead. The Bushnell warranty is apparently very good, but it does cost more than $0 for the service.

Whynot showed me a Scopechief 3x command post that was pretty darn clear! So he found me a 4x command post for $100, I should have it in 10 days or so!!

The 4200 is a secritt.
Fabbyewluzz glass and clarity awner.
2.5x10 iff'in you stumpull awn one, grab it.

There, I typed it.
Frukk'in Bushnull.

Agreed 100%. A 4200 in 2.5-10x40mm does it all and tough as it gets too. 40mm objective lenses are all a good rifle needs and keeps the scope mounted low enough to keep your cheek welded to where it's supposed to be.

Just got a nice bushnell Scopechief 4x commend post for $120 landed at my door! That thing is bright feel solid and well made and light! Fine crosshair for the range and command post for the field!
I saw that there is a nice Bausch&Lomb elite 4000 1.5-6x36 and bushnell elite 2-7x32 right now on the EE for $250, I think it’s a deal

The more i shoot the more i think a 300$ used hunting scope is the way to go. Rarely need more than 6x out east and also don't want to worry about every tree branch you walk by.

Very rarely need more than 6X out West either. I have hunted and guided in the mountains here for over fifty years.

Personally have only taken two extremely long shots on game and both were one shot and done. A Dalls ram that was a legitimate 500 yd, 150 spitzer from a 280 Rem, and a huge bull moose that I am too embarrassed to tell you the estimated range using 270 Winchester loaded with the old 130gr Sivertips ahead of a stomach full of Surplus 4831.

Twice in fifty years was two too many times. Never tried it again. If I insisted on getting closer while guiding, why should I be any different? :(

I think the quality of new production scopes has improved a lot over the last few years due to new glass etching technologies. I agree that all above mentioned scopes are good but I would still go for a new one any time of the day. I recommend one of the site sponsors, shipping is free $200 and above. Great service:

I'd be cruising the EE looking for a solid used Leupold, either an M8 4x, M8 6x, or if you're lucky, a 1.5-5x Vari-X III or VX3. Alternately a used Burris Fullfield in 2-7x or 3-9x is a very good scope for the money.
