I'm planning on ordering a Milspec tomorrow and I need a scope for it. Most of the ranges around here only go to 200 yards but I would like to be able to shoot further when I get the chance. Any suggestions on magnification.

Magnification - 20 or 24? Try more magnification and see if happy with field of view and ability to keep steady.

Reticle - mildot has functionality if willing to spend time to learn to use it (or already know how). Some scopes come with turrets that perform a similar function w.r.t. drop rates. I use fine cross hair as that was the only option available - now quite like it (targets are small a long ways away, "fine" cross hair lets me see them).

Turrets - target turrets make life easy.

Brand - whatever you're willing to pay for.

Tube - if <44mm 1" good, if >44mm then 30mm better (more tube, more light).

I like Nikon (6-24x 50mm) - good value. Others will like different reticles, different zoom, different brands - why are you buying 5R instead of Long Range Tactical, Savage (well thats obvious :) ), or...

I have a 5R milspec and have a Leupold Vari-X II 6-18x on it with the target reticle..

Though I haven't actually fired it yet (got to the range and found out that my sizing die wasn't working properly)

But I did use the scope with my LTR and love it at 100-200yds.. Haven't gotten out to a place to shoot further, but for punching paper a target reticle works great as you can see what you are aiming at that much better.

If you are going to be paper punching, then more is better. When your rifle is stationary as in fired from a bipod or rest, then being able to spot your target in a hurry is not an issue. Being able to spot your hits definitely is.

24 all the way up to 45 power

I couldn't afford a leupold so I got a bushnell elite 6500 4.5-30x50 By the way you'll
love your 5r milspec, I bought one nov. 2008. Those rifles like the 175 gr bullets because of the faster rate of twist. I use Sierra
175gr hpbt matchking with 43 grs varget powder. I tried CCI br2 primers and standard large rifle primers not much difference.

I wanted to spend under a grand.

I almost bought a Savage until I read about the 5R.

That Bushell was the scope I had in mind, my buddy just got one and it seems pretty impresive.

Why would some guys only use a fixed 10 or 3-9?

If you are hunting or using mil-dots for ranging, having low-power or fixed length scopes is far better, and it is better for shoulder firing since you would have a hart time stabilizing a 42X image. Furthermore, the lower power is fine for enlarging you target, but also gives a wide field of view so you can FIND your target with your scope. A real problem for well-camouflaged game.

Paper punchers want to see their hits. Good quality high-power is a must

Nice scope JohnnyBender, The elite 6500 is up there with all the so call "HIGH END" scope's. The quality and reliability of the 6500 is equal or even surpassed a lot of $$$ scope's. Trust me, I know.lol I have few leupold's,like...VXIII, mark2,mark4, burris XTR,...NF...elite4200/6500...and I found there are not much different but the price tag.LOL All my HIGH END scopes are for sale except the elite's, if anyone is interested, it's all like new condition.

You had better get a milspec scope. If you mix Milspec and Non-Milspec you could get a reaction like mixing vinegar and baking soda. Dangerous stuff. Besides, you've got the power of Milspec with the rifle. If you add a Milspec scope you'll have double the Milspec in the same package. It's like concentrated Milspec. Milspec-squared! You could possibly rule the world!
