Scope for a Savage 12FVSS .223 ?

I've just purchased (Read: Have on-order.) a new rifle to "upgrade" me from rimfire to a decent center-fire rig...

The reasons why are somewhat complex (See: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=408435 )

but I've settled on a Savage 12FVSS, chambered for .223.

I'm going to be shooting pretty much exclusively paper, out to about 300 yards to start, and I need to figure out what scope to put on the gun once it shows up. I'm fairly budget-restrained (That is, I'm broke.), and while I don't want to put a piece-of-#### $100 scope on the gun, I'd like to keep the price as low as is reasonable possible. $200 - $300 is about as high as I can afford to go right now.

Can all you folks out there on CGN offer thoughts / advice on what I should get to start off?

Used

Thats pretty much the only way you'll find anything decent for that price. Bushnell or Falcon is probably going to be what you end-up finding.

Really $350-400 is the bottom of the decent used glass price range, anything under that will probably be complete garbage (exception being a Bushnell 3200 10x, they are good and cheap).

P.S. If you shoot at VFGPA then I'd be happy to let you look through some decent glass in your price range.
 
I stuck a cheapie (<$120.00) Tasco mil dot on mine for pretty much the same reason.

Surprisingly, it isn't bad at all for the money. The mil dot is great at 200 yds. At 300 I need to do some adjustment, but I do hit pop cans!

My next upgrade is a better scope setup for it, but I haven't decided on what yet.

Ditto on the Tasco 6x24x scope. The gophers explode at 300 yards and beyond. have shot targets to 1000 but not as good as the gun can shoot. 4 years and no problems with the scope caused by recoil. Maybe i just got a "good one?"
 
I have a Mueller APV on my 223 bolt action rifle. I hear the Mueller Eraticator has a good reputation. It has mildots and high magnification. Isn't there a new dealor on here selling Mueller's at a good price?

I'd also consider a used Bushnell 3200 5-15 tactical. I've seen them on here for $350.00 used.
 
I have never used a millet but a lot of the sig .223 guys in the U.S. are giving them GREAT reviews.
