I would appreciate hearing from any members regarding their first choice for a scope for the AR for BCRA type shoots. I have been looking at the ELCAN but am not completely sold on it. Have been out of the loop for a while and am not current on what is presently tried and true. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For BCRA the Elcan is good and was on most of the top rifles at the 2005 provincals. The leupold MR/T is also good. I use the Elcan and the 3-9x M1 Leupold MR/T. I would also like to try the Leupold 1.5-5x M2 MR/T... it costs less than a new Elcan and should be a great little scope.

I'm not a BCRA guy (I'm an ORA guy), but I would suggest the Leupold MR/T 3-9 with the M1 turrets. It is "the" scope for SR shooting in Canada. My opinion,, which is shared by others.
The 3-9x MR/T costs about the same as an Elcan but if you take a stripper model with duplex reticle insted of the mildot and don't bother with ilumination it is about $300 cheaper I think. You don't need the mildot and lit reticle for SR anyway though there are cool

Right now, I've got a Leupold MR/T 3x9x36 M1 (with Mildot reticle) on top of my Bushy AR 20" rig. I just love it. I used to have a Leupold 3.5x10x40mm Tactical on there, but my 47 year old eyes need reading glasses on the line just to be able to adjust the knobs for elev or windage. That's why I switched to the M1 turrets. I won't need my reading glasses now.
Now if you get one of these 30mm bodied scopes, you will need some rings and possibly a mounting base depending upon your cheek structure for a great cheek weld. I've got a set of Leupold Mark 4 HIGH rings that work for me. I even bought an ARMS Flat top base "riser" just in case I needed another half an inch from the upper reciever's picatinny rail.
As with all our suggestions, get what your budget , your shooting game, your shooting style, your eyes, etc will dictate ! Get what works for you. Now for you CF shooters, you have no choice. The ELCAN does extremely well at the recent ORA Sep Championship match we just hosted. I ain't badmouthing the ELCAN since many shooters in the 550 club used ELCAN's to kick my 500 point ass. And I was shooting with the Leupold MR/T.

I have used the ELCAN in the past, but I had an experience with the front pivot screw loosening in the middle of a Service match.After this, I lost confidence in the scope.
The Optics themselves are excellent, but it is the mounting/adjustment system that is suspect.
I currently use a Leupold MK VI M1/LR 3.5 - 10 X 40mm Illuminated Mil Dot scope.
I simply dial the scope down to 4X or 6X and leave it there.

I picked up a Gen1 Elcan for a friend off here for 250.00, Now myself I wouldn't get one ( bad exp with them as well ), I much rather get a IOR 1-4X scope with the CQB ret @ ~750 CND. Also its has a lum ret. The Ret is simular to the TA31 Doughnut of death as KevinB calls it.

How do you determine what generation of elcan you are looking at?? Is there external features to determine what's what? I'm going to probably buy a used one since the gunshows are starting to come along now...

I have generally found that if an Elcan has had one Mod done, it usually has had them all done (there are exceptions) things to look for.
1. Metal thumb screws
2. Spring in between the base
3. Hole drilled on front of base when doing windage adjustment upgrade to older base, newer bases will not have this hole as the upgrade is done at time of manufacture.
4.Bright tritium.
Beware the binned scopes sold on ebay a few years back, these go cheap and are nasty, my first foray into Elcans netted me one of these for the paltry sum of $900.00.

The ACOG issue is simply that the BDC is on the reticle, some don't find this to be of issue but the base BDC on the Elcan is more intuitive especially during the rundowns, couple that with the better optics and field of view the Elcan wins. There is however nothing stopping you from training with and doing exceptionally well with an ACOG as many have done. Just bring what ya got. I shot my first Service rifle match with a fixed handle 14.5" M4 and Colt 3x scope and still managed to finish in the top third, the more time you spend trying to get "ready" the more others are actually shooting.
Being a university student on a thight budget, i'm presently looking at the SWAT series from Barska (www.barska.com).

Shooting a Service Conditions Match with iron sights is preferential to using a cheap scope, although I don't really mind if your scope loses zero between stages and it takes you both sighters and 8 of 10 on score to get your dope back, you will have spent money on a BCRA/DCRA membership, time, ammo, match fee, gas and 14+ hours of your time and learned absolutely nothing except not to use a cheap scope...Use irons if you can't afford a good optic, the Army used A1 sights to 500m for years. Save your money for a good sight. See how much money I saved you!. I take email transfers.
