Hello, this is my first post so please excuse me if I did not submit in the proper category.

I have a Brno Model 21, 8mm. I am curious if any other forum members have scoped theirs. When I bought the gun about 10 years ago, it was already scoped, and I replaced it with a TV-view Redfield which was never mounted properly. The scope is toast (and I can't get it fixed) and I want to re-scope it.

The original scope and the replacement were mounted on some risers, which I do not believe are necessary as there seemed to be plenty of clearance between the bolt handle and the scope. I removed the risers and want to mount a new scope directly on the claw mounts on the top of the receiver.

I'd like to hear from others who have done the same and any advice you may offer.

Best regards,

TubeGuy

The original mounts with rings are difficult to find and are heavy but of amazing quality. As luck would have it, there are two listed under the optics section right now (a couple of the only ones I've seen other than my own) with Meopta scopes. They're not cheap but they are excellent, easily removed and return to zero precisely when re-installed They're also heavy and built to drive on with tanks. If you want to stick with normal Weaver style rings, I've got a 7x57 drilled and tapped by somebody with Weaver bases. Medium rings easily clear the ocular on a 2-7x33 Leupold and a 3-9x40 Bausch Lomb.

TubeGuy,
If your bolt handle is original/unaltered then you will have to find some CZ HIGH rings, or use those risers you speak of..
The measurement on my rings from the bottom of the ring base to the bottom of the ring itself is .712 on one set and .772 on the other set..
I don't know if these rings are still available as I got mine some time ago and haven't been able to locate any more..
Warne and Talley make rings for these rifles (Brno/CZ's) also but they are not high enough to use on a rifle with original/unaltered bolt handle..
As far as what scope to use I would not get anything over 9 power and 40MM obj as a larger obj may not clear the rear site..

Good luck finding what you are looking for as these rifles in their original form can be a pain to scope..

Brno 21H Scope Bases.......

Here's some photos of my Brno 21H and I'm glad nrut mentioned the bolt handle modifications as mine was cut and welded. My dad bought me this when I was around 12 and the mods to the handle were already done.

If you have the original butterknife bolt handle the scope has to be mounted quite high for it to clear. As others have mentioned, some people modify the bolt handle but I quite like the orginal design.

Talley Manufaturing makes some wonderful rings that clamp right onto the bridges of the action. They are simple and very solid.

As for a scope the world is your oyster. But for me I really appreciate a nice Leupold in whatever version fits your budget. My favorite is the 2.5 to 8x but depending on where and what you hunt, you may find something better for you.

Hi Thanks everyone for your wonderful help. Looks like the risers were put there for a reason, but I find that they are too high. My bolt handle does not appear to be altered in any way and I like the look of it. I will check out Talley to see what they have.

Many thanks!

Conetrol make a "Daptar" base for BRNO's ... I have not seen them but all the Conetrol products I have seen are very elegant . Perhaps a note to them might get a picture of how the setup would look. They aren't inexpensive but if this is a special rifle maybe a consideration.

Thanks AP. It is a special rifle to me. I paid next to nothing for it a number of years ago and I am in love with the gun. The action is just so smooth, and the double set trigger is so nice to use. I will check out those bases as your suggest.

I found a set of high rings at Lefebvre's in North Bay, Ontario. Not sure what Gerry has left for CZ/Brno.

It seems that a little bit of patience resulted in finding a nice set of Warnes rings.

Brno mounts.

Check what Leupold has for mounts. I have a set on my ZG47. I got them with a 21F but they wouldnt quite clear a Leupold scope with the butterknife handle. Another option is to use a compact model Leupold scope as the eye-piece is smaller.

I removed the risers and want to mount a new scope directly on the claw mounts on the top of the receiver.

If you do indeed have "claw mounts" and not the more common double square bridge with 19Mm dovetails, you have a more complicated challenge. Some early Brno 21's were made with a round receiver. Their claw mounts were individually hand fitted to the actions and rings were often soldered to the scope. A good European trained gunsmith would be able to help you fit a new set of claw mounts to the existing bases but expect to pay as much for rings and fitting as you would for a good quality scope.

On my dovetail reciever 22F, I have an original Brno skeleton mount fitted with modified Leupold QD rings. With a compact Leupold 6x scope the whole package fits and functions well with the butterknife bolt handle.

My 21H has a modified bolt handle that works well with the Talley mounts and standard scope.
