I'm looking at buying a scope that can be dual purpose hunting and target shooting. The lowest magnification that I'd be looking 4x and a 40mm+ objective and shooting from 25 to 150+ yds.
I simply can't settle on any specific brand or reticle so far and I'd appreciate all input for this do all gun.
Budget is max 250$.
Anyone recommend Mueller?

Hi. The latest i bought is a sightron SIH 4-12x40 190$ And it s great !! The AO goes down to 10 yds. 12x might not be enough for 150+ yards but Check That Line out. Totaly satisfied with it.

Mueller's are great scopes for the money, I really liked the APT I had on my .22WMR. Granted, a 30mm tube...and a pretty big chunk of hardware to be bolted onto the top of a .22.

On the distances you're looking at shooting~if you zero your scope @ 50 yards, you'll have about 27" of drop @ 150 yards using standard velocity ammo. That's allot of elevation. Also, to see a .22 hole @ 150 yards I'd guess you might need a scope in the 18-20x power range. I personally think that .22lr is a predictable, 60-100 yard shooter for most guns, ammo, and shooting skill out there. Something that tops-out in the 12x range would suffice. I have a Vortex Crossfire II 12x that has pretty nice glass, but the scope isn't better than a Mueller.

hawke varmint 6-24 excelent scope 270$ with tax from a local dealer. has a half mildot reticle and 6-10 i find is good for hunting 24 for mini f class competition shooting, but also works for hunting with some shimming (6 layers on pop can on rear ring) for a bottomed out 125 yrd zero then add 30 moa of elevation for 300 yards.have used it on crows at 100+ yards

Thank you all for the input!
Anyone know where a Mueller dealer in Canada?
I checked Amazon.ca but they are out of stock for the APT.

I don't mind a scope for target shooting but a scoped .22 in the bush for hunting is the most useless thing. All you see is leaves, fur, or feathers. I've made several attempts to scope a 22 for hunting but have removed them all in favor of iron sights where I can shoot much faster.

You'll definitely want AO on a 22 scope. The ones that aren't will be fixed at 100 yards and useless under that. Scopes that are advertised as black powder or shotgun scopes are usually fixed at 50.

Agree 100%.

My experience is the opposite. I started with Iron sights for .22 bush hunting and very quickly switched to rim fire specific scopes, zeroed at 50m.

Try to do a grouse head shot at 50 meters, through trees with Iron sights and let us know how it works for you.

I highly recommend any model of hawke scope. I put an Eclipse 30 4-16x50 on my 22 and although it may look like overkill it is absolutely awesome. Nice clear optics all the way around, cool features, lifetime warranty. They used to use different glass but have completely redone the line and for what you pay they are incredible. I just lay down in a field on the bipod and lay waste out to about 100 yards but can go further. What I really like about them is the side focus over the ao. It's just much faster and easier when you're changing distance constantly. To put it in perspective i just sold a Bushnell elite tactical 6-24x50 which retails about 900 new right now for a Hawke sidewinder 30 which is 500 new.. A lot of people that haven't tried them (especially the old guys) will tell me that was stupid but they can go #### themselves because they really are awesome.

Just might have to go with Hawke since I can't find the Mueller APT anywhere.
Hawke also has nice features such as 1/2 mildot reticle and a side focus knob for ~220$.

Maybe off topic, but where do you hunt grouse where you need to take a shot at one from 50 meters? If I just walk calmly down a path, I generally end up with a few of them following me, and sometimes feel like if I had a hockey stick in your hands it would be all that was needed to take them with.

I'm sure I would take a shot from 50 if I had to, but the need has yet to come up.
