Scope for hunting (mid range, up to 400 yards?)

Sounds like you want a variable me..
VX3 3.5-10X40 regular duplex with M1 turret would be my first choice..

Fixed scope would definitely be a Leopold 6X42 regular duplex with a M1 turret or CDS..

Haven't owned a Vortex so I can't speak to them..

I realize the 9.3 has an almost surreal following on this website, but I think a "sniper" scope such as most Nightforce are, is a tad overboard.

Regardless, I realize the OP is free to choose as he sees fit. Personally, I'd use something in the 2.5-8, 3-9, 2.5-10 with a simple duplex reticle for a 9.3, it's simply not a long range caliber.

Even for a 366 Wagner believe like me.

Stick with a 2.5-8x Leupold or my personal favourite hunting scope, the 1.5-5x Leupold. If you have to ask what kind of scope to use for a 500 yard shot then you have no business taking a 500 yard shot.

Hi guys..

I decided to give the Vortex Viper PST 2,5-10x44 a try. It is less than half the price of the Mark4 (hopefully not less than half the quality) but hopefully it will do good.

If you have to ask what kind of scope to use for a 500 yard shot then you have no business taking a 500 yard shot.
BigUglyMan! but I have to agree :) However, I am slowly getting my gear ready… Step by step.. have to get my reloading equipment too, get the Accubond bullets, etc. so still far away from taking my first shots at the RANGE (100 and 200 yards!!) but I am getting closer.

I will keep you up to date… (might take a while but..).

A question to PaulHunts;
Where did you find a Timney trigger for a Tikka T3?
Do you have a part number or dealer/store you can turn me towards?
I couldn't find one manufactured for that action on their website...
Thanks :)

I got that weapon in Europe.. I think it was the barrel/system of the Tikka Super Varmint (the gunsmith put everything together, bedded the barrel I think too??), but I chose a laminated stock and the Timney trigger. I have heard that they are good triggers put I had no idea. It is by far the best trigger I have ever used. I shot some weapons with double triggers and I just hate them (I have a drilling e.g. that is a greta gun but what a terrible trigger.. I do realize that it has to do with the way these weapons are/were build but I cant get used to it and find them dangerous..). Not long ago I had a passionate hunter for a visit and he could not believe how nice that Timney trigger was in that gun..

Hello PaulHunts,

I have a tikka T3 with the bull barrel in 300WSM. Because the main purpose of this rifle is for hunting, like yours, I've installed a Vortex HS 2.5-10 X 42. Got a near picatini rail with warn mounts and this gun is just crazy precise for an out of the box rifle (1/2'' group 100yrd all the time with shelf cartridge). Shooting to 500yrd will require reloaded round (more constant velocity). I've tried mine at 800yrd at because of inconstant velocities the point of impact was hard the keep steady (up and down). The Vortex scope are well priced and well suited for your application, but keep in mind they don't have parallax adjustment...

Overall you have a great riffle but the caliber is kind of at it's limits because of the trajectory. It will be possible to shoot at 500yrd, but to keep a group capable of hitting a coyote will be very challenging, especially on a moving target. to help out your scope turret it could also be a good idea of having a 20 moa rail.

Good luck with your project!

Hey Martin,

thanks for your message. Great to hear that you got a Tikka+Vortex too and that you are very happy with it (I dont doubt it one bit!).

Thanks and I like the word "project" :)

I'm no expert but I would move the stand and voilà problem solved. If not, Of course you can get a bus to go a hundred mph but in the end it woulda been a lot easier just to buy a corvette and probably cheaper. Many people here know many things and if you are a great tinkerer go ahead...otherwise get a different rifle and and a turret scope and then you can even shoot the 500 yd distance you may need.

I got the turret scope (2.5-10x44 Vortex). I have to say that it looks great, especially the turret (very solid and simple)! I really like the reticle too… so another important step made.. I am getting closer.. next step is to get all the reloading equipment, brass, etc.
Thanks
