Hey all.

Just picked up a new Winchester Model 70 Stealth II, in 22-250. Spur of the moment.......

What scope would be recommended for paper use only? What kind of range could I expect out of the the 26" barrel? Do I need a canted base?

Would like to stick with something that has target turrets on it. MAYBE a Mil Dot reticle.

Also to what would be the maxium range that a 22-250 is good to?

Range would be out to 500 Yds as you shooting pretty light bullets.
Best at 350 to 300 really. As for scope...something to 20 power in
Varmint type recticle, or mildot. I like weaver T24 or V24 for target
as the prices are good, but settle for fine cross hairs dot. Lot's
of scope out there to choose from. Depends on what you want
and what you want to pay. A great scope if IOR Valada or High end
Leo. Leo in 6 x 18s might do you at reasonable cost.

I got a 6.5-24X56mm with a 30mm tube on mine. Overkill......of course. Gophers get really small at 300+ yrds though. I personally can't see myself shooting past 350yrds in the field on any day, its just not practical. I'd rather drive up closer and see them explode.

I just ordered a S&B 5 - 25 X 56mm PM II with the double turn Elevation turret & Illuminated P4 reticle for my sniper rig.

I checked out one a buddy of mine bought and it is AWESOME!!!Crystal clear.:D

Thanx Skullboy. Sounds expensive for a 22-250. Hope the next rifle will be a 300 Winchester Magnum.

Yes, the S&B is a wee pricey ($3600.00 + taxes  ), but after looking through and checking out a buddie's, I sold off some toys to get one.;)

If you are looking to keep costs in check you could consider a Bushnell Elite 4200 (42-6242M). I have one mounted on a similar heavy barreled Model 70 action. The low end (cheap) Millet mounts I used fit up really nice with the barrel ie...the front lense is "40 mm" and keeping that close but not too close to the barrel should make it so that you do not require additional material on your stock for you to obtain a good cheek weld while shooting. With that stock, and a 50 to 56 mm objective you may find it less than perfect ergonomically without adding something for cheek weld.

The actual objective lense is only 33 mm in that scope. So you aren't drawing in all that much light for the high magnifications. Over 20x can let you see your hits in the larger calbres to quite a distance..but it is not all that relaxing to use.

Eye relief will be suitable even at the high magnifications with that rifle and 22-250. Just don't use the thickest shooting glasses you can find.

Mine has been accurate and tough. I've seen if for as low as $545 and there are used ones around.

I'd have a hard time spending over $1000 on a top deck for a non-match grade barrel. I expect the Leupold and similar products which approach and exceed $1000 in this market would be superior.

..in haste...

as far as I know, every current production model 22-250 uses a 1:14 twist

Savages are 1 in 12. Coupled with the higher speeds of the 22-250 (vs the 223), you can stabilize 60-70gr bullets. If you pushed it, you MIGHT be able to keep them supersonic to 1000.
