Sorry if this has been asked before. I have a socom that shoots pretty good and is a lot of fun at 200 yards or so. But I have a terrible scope on it and it has had it (still good on open sights so its the scope as the mounts still solid). Now if I had $400+/- to spend at cabelas or wholesale what would you recommend?

When I set mine up for whitetail hunting I went with a fixed 2.5 ultra light leupold. For targets a fixed 10x 3200 bushnell worked well.I've also read the m14 was hard on scopes , but ive never had an issue.

They are apparently, but with Vortex's unconditional lifetime warranty, you can't go wrong if you wreck it will shooting!

You can find a decent 3-9x40 for your budget. The tactical and long range glass get more expensive. Their Diamond back line of scopes look good for what you may need it for. Personally I can't see slapping a $800-1000 scope on a $400 rifle.

But it comes down to personal tastes.

"M14s" being hard on scopes has more to do with mounts coming loose, etc. There's a lot of cheap mounts out there, don't be cheap.

That said, I like Vortex and Leupold's warranty.

Is it a Socom 18 or a Socom 16?
Sorry I guess I should have been more clear, Its a DA Socom 18.5 I got from Canada ammo and like it. The barrel index is off a little bit but she shoots real nice. Ive got a billet aluminum scope mount that was made for Millarms but 400 rounds latter the NCstar scope has had it. I've been looking up on vortex now and everything I'm seeing looks good. I have to go down to Cabelas and see one in person. I have a redfield but was told that it wouldn't take the beating from a m14 but they could be wrong.
All my friends have picked up m14 (m305s) over the last year or so and were having a friendly competitions after Christmas (money and pride is on the line) so I have to get the bugs worked out of mine. Thanks for the info and keep it coming

Falcon scopes are great on M-14 clones. The only rifle I would ever mount an NCStar scope on would be a .22, and even then, I don't think it's a good choice.

Good luck with your build and enjoy.

I know this doesn't help you but for your application (200yrds or so) I would get the barrel indexing corrected and upgrade the iron sights.

I've got a 2007 norinco with a full size barrel I use with open sites already and a garand. As for indexing the barrel, you are right but I'm waiting for Barney to have a clinic up this way again and ill take both m14s. So how would a Redfield hold up on an m14 as I already have one kicking around.
thanks
