Scope for rabbit hunting/target shooting?

Hey everyone, I've been target shooting for a few years now, but I'm just starting to hunt. I just bought a 22lr bolt action and I am looking at getting a scope for it. I target shoot a lot, but I'm looking for a scope that'll work well for both. The ones I've been considering are 2-7x, 2.5-10x, 3-9x or a 3-12x. I was just wondering what others think would be the best options. I'm not set on a particular brand, but I've been looking at the Bushnells and would like to stay under $250. I'm planning on setting up my Ruger 10/22 with a red dot for faster, closer hunting. Thanks!

It is difficult to do everything with one scope unless you want compromises.
If you want a scope for rabbit hunting that could be used on informal target shooting, then a 2-7x would be a good choice. Reasonably light in weight and easy to carry if you are beating the fields and bushes for rabbits. Keep it at low power most of the time. When target shooting put it up at 7x and you are good to go for most paper punching.
However, if you are running a heavy barrel target rifle then the choice of scope might change to a higher range (3-12 or something similar). Becomes heavy and awkward for carrying around a lot.

what distance do you want to take the rabbits at? a 2-7 or 3-9 will be fine for shorter range free standing hunting but not be very good for printing paper. I find 16x to be about the bottom end of use for any rimfire precision type target shooting, usually 50, 100 and more.

Bring a tripod or shooting stick and easily take rabbits out past 100 with ammo/scope dope.
