Recently I purchased Ruger Hawkeye 24 308 rifle and I am trying to decide on what scope to get. What scope do you recommend with a budget of around $500 for this rifle?

My personal choice would be a used Leupold VX1 or VX2 in either 3x9 or 4x12. Go to your local gun store and look through the scopes. I've looked at Vortex/Bushnell/Steiner and Burris against Leupold and it's clear as day who the winner is. I fin a lot of blackness in the objective with other brands vs Leupold. But everyone has a personal preference.

For your budget check out used scopes. Some great deals to get a superior scope. Leopold and Vortex in that price range used will have you looking through some pretty decent glass.

Used Leupold VX3 2.5-8x would be my choice. Hell, a new one probably wouldn't be too much more than $500.

I'm with the "look through as many as you can" camp on this one. What works great for me may not for others, and even then, there are scopes I love that just aren't ergonomic for me on certain guns.

With a sporter version of a Hawkeye in 308 I think I'd go with a 2-7x33 Vx-R. Like the eyebox on that one a lot. Used to have a 7mm-08 with a Redfield Revolution on it, which is pretty much a Vx-1. It kept the package light and handy, felt like a good fit on that rifle.

I don't do a whole lot of dialing/long range shooting so...kinda dictates needs eh?

I use Bushnell 2-7x32 units on 3 of my rifles. One is a 3200 & the other 2 are 3500's. I also use a Bushnell Prime 1-4x24 on my RAR in 450 Bushmaster.
All these scopes suit my purposes beauty and I've had zero issues with 'em. Been a steady Bushnell user since the 70's.

The Leupold VX-3 2.5-8 is hard to beat. I've also had great luck with the VX-2 3-9X40, which is less expensive, but a GREAT workhorse.

I don't know if they are still available, but I have three Burris Fullfield II scopes, 3-9X40, and they are an exceptional value. I really like the burris reticle.

Those Fullfield II scopes are ones that you should just buy on sight at the gun show or store used rack. They're incredibly good scopes and generally sell for nothing.
