scope for steyr hs50

The recoil from most 50s is quite mild as I mentioned. Without a brake they are BRUTAL!! but even with the not so efficient brake that the Steyr comes with, the rifles recoil is much like that of 12 gauge shotgun.

Case in point a 12 year old 80 lb girl who shoots it every time she can. She in well into her 2nd rebarrel job on that rifle now at age 17

The stock design of the Steyr in my opinion is very poor, they use a tube as a rear stock that the bolt goes insideof, so you can not get a decent cheekweld on it at all. In order for most guys to see through the scope the scope needs to be mounted up quite high off the action.
I see many Steyr owners who have taken the hard plastic cheek rest off in order to be able to see through their scope, hence my recommendation of very high rings.

The cheek rest is not plastic, it is wood covered with nextel swede coating.

I think i would rather have high scope rings when compared to completely removing the bolt after every round.

Well that is why there are different strokes for different folks.
Personally I prefer an EXTREMELY STRONG precision made action with a good match type trigger ala Jewel in a 1 piece stock and a brake that does NOT send a blast of gasses into my face with every shot.
To each their own.

For those whom are interested I am the other guy that owned the HS50. If you shoot the rifle LOWER to the ground than the original bipod height you will get ground dirt in your face. Most likely why it is that height. The recoil is no more than a 12ga. As for the rifle it digested any round that I could put in it(I will leave that topic at that). It comes apart with ease totally. Accuracy is well within factory specs(1 moa at 1000).I have done a 5 shot group 4 of which were within a 6" group at a 1000yrds. That was using m33 bullets(US869 powder really sends them out there without using a moa rail). Oh and do not try to take off the barrel with the action closed. The chamber WAS empty it just the bolt was closed what a experience that was. I finally used Smith Enterprise 50 bmg rings and removed the check piece from the stock to take care of the scope issue. All in all you will not be disappointed with your new purchase a great rifle for the money. I just wanted something new.

If you want an "extremely strong precision made" action than why don't you get a BAT or a Mcbros.

Good luck shooting in a timed event with a shell holder action.

Sorry for the mini hi-jack:p

bruce johnstone, I am curious to know which range in Ontario allow 50 BMG?

I am looking for a range that's long enough where you are allow to shoot the big 50 and I can't seems to find a definite answer.

Anybody knows?

You can see what I mean about having to use REALLY high rings to get behind the scope decently.
That young lass has her eye almost dead center of the ocular and I would wager there has to be an inch and a half at least between the barrel and objective lens.
It appears that the rifle has an AR15 type scope riser on top f the factory rail.
And I seriously doubt it is wind that is blowing her hair about, THAT is redirected gasses from the brake at work.

Correct. There was no wind that day.

Sharon gun club allows all legal calibers, including .50 BMG. Ranges available are 100, 200, and 300 meters. Not exactly stretching its legs, but better then nothing for being able to shoot it when you want.

The other place I know of is if you join the ORA, you have occational access to a few military bases (Borden, etc.) and are allowed to use their 1000 meter ranges.

More probably allow it.

I would thing alot of the ranges allow it. It's not restricted and most of the time people love to watch it.
Orillia allows it, Oshawa is ok with it, Sharon, Borden (O.R.A. shoots, 1000 yds avail.)
Burlington told me they would (not sure I wanna shoot this one indoors though, laff)
