Hello,

I am looking at getting a scope for a Winchester pre-64 model 70 30-06 for hunting and some target shooting.

I am new to the scope world, and I have been reading a lot of information on the subject.

Here is my wishlist:

- 3x9x40 seems to be a good multi-purpose hunting scope.
- I would rather have a tough scope with a good warranty that won't break than a scope I have to send in for repair that has a excellent warranty.
- A scope that will last a long time.
- A scope that holds zero after abuse or a substantial amount of shooting.
- The concensus seems to be that a better quality lens is better than higher magnification, so good clear lenses would be good.
- Good low light vision
- $300-$400 price range, but might look at $500.

Ok, so reading previous threads, The Zeiss Conquest seemed to be a clear winner for many people, but that would be a tad more than I would like to spend. I also read that they are discontinued? The Zeiss Terra is closer to what I would be comfortable paying, however the reviews I have read are not that great. This takes the Zeiss out of the running at this price point?

If my information is correct, the Leupold VX-I and VX-II are the older models, and the VX-1 and VX-2 are the newer models. People seem to feel that the VX-1 glass is as good as the VX-2 glass, and the price difference is not worth it. So for the Leupold, the VX-1 for approx. $300. Many people recommend Leupold for the excellent warranty. Is the toughness there?

The Redfield revolution is an option (made by Leupold?) that some people feel is a budget version of the primary Leupold product lines.

Burris seems to have a good following, with the Fullfield II Ballistic Plex being $250-300.

Nikon has the ProStaff that people feel is pretty good, but seems to need warranty work a fair amount (rings?).

Bushnell also has a good following, not as much as Leupold, with a certain amount of warranty work also. The Bushnell Elite 4200 Seems to be around the $300 range.

Alright guys, I would appreciate your input on essentially the best sub-$500 scope for a 30-06 that would meet the wish list. Please keep in mind that I would go to $500 with compelling reasons if it would make it really worthwhile. Also, some of you may not have had the same experience as what I have outlined above for specific scope brands, but I tried to get info from multiple sources and web site opinions and reviews.

Thank you for your time.

A nice shape Leupold in VX III or the other versions of it for the $350 mark would be a good score.
One needs to be quick on the draw and trust the seller to a point.

Bushnell Elite is the best scope of all you mentioned and is the best bang for you buck. I have two Elites and two VX- 3's. Do a Google search Bushnell Elite vs VX-3.
Good luck this fall.

Leupold VX-1 is an excellent scope but uses friction turrets. They're great for a hunting rifle where the zero is not changed frequently but they are a pain when doing much serious target shooting. Click turrets are the upgrade you get with VX-2 and a better option if you plan to do much target shooting. Before you buy a Leupold check Korth Groups website and make sure the dealer is on Korth's site. If they are not then Korth will not honour the warranty. If they are then you've got one of the best warranties in the business. Some people whine about that and even hike their skirts and refuse to buy a Leupold. I just buy them from Korth dealers. I've always loved Leupolds for their wide FOV and generous eyebox. The glass is always great for the price.

I went to a local dealer and checked out both the leupold vx-2 and the bushnell elite in 3x9x40. Both guys i spoke to preferred the bushnell elite with the rainguard. I'll have to take another look at them to see what works best for me. I'll watch the sales and see what comes out of it. Thanks guys.

I would recommend the new Zeiss Terra line of scopes. It's supposed to be a replacement for the original Conquest line (the new Conquest moves upmarket), with equal or better quality glass and lower price. These are made in Japan and a 3x9 will set you back around $450. Having compared it side by side with vx-ii and vx-iii, the Terra was noticeably brighter and clearer. IMO, this is the best "affordable" scope on the market right now.

Nothing wrong with Zeiss quality...Conquest line was excellent but I just sent in my Conquest 3.5-10x44 for repair after mounting it on .270 that rattled the internals. I was told 14 weeks minimum to get it fixed and returned. Leupold and Vortex have much better warranty turn around.

After owning scopes ranging from $100-$1500 its hard to beat Vortex Optics in terms of price and outstanding warranty. Bushnell is absolutely the worst for warranty, or this has been my experience.

capp325, I was seriously considering the Zeiss Terra, and read quite a bit of reviews, and most people feel it is underwhelming in quality compared to other scopes in that price range. I must say I was surprised at this since Zeiss has a really good name for scopes. I'll have to try it side by side compared to the other scopes.

Anyone have any experience with the Zeiss Terra compared to the Bushnell Elite or the Leupold VX-2?

I have an Elite 3200 and bought a Terra as a gift for my dad. The latter is a better scope in every way IMO.
