Hello,
I am looking at getting a scope for a Winchester pre-64 model 70 30-06 for hunting and some target shooting.
I am new to the scope world, and I have been reading a lot of information on the subject.
Here is my wishlist:
- 3x9x40 seems to be a good multi-purpose hunting scope.
- I would rather have a tough scope with a good warranty that won't break than a scope I have to send in for repair that has a excellent warranty.
- A scope that will last a long time.
- A scope that holds zero after abuse or a substantial amount of shooting.
- The concensus seems to be that a better quality lens is better than higher magnification, so good clear lenses would be good.
- Good low light vision
- $300-$400 price range, but might look at $500.
Ok, so reading previous threads, The Zeiss Conquest seemed to be a clear winner for many people, but that would be a tad more than I would like to spend. I also read that they are discontinued? The Zeiss Terra is closer to what I would be comfortable paying, however the reviews I have read are not that great. This takes the Zeiss out of the running at this price point?
If my information is correct, the Leupold VX-I and VX-II are the older models, and the VX-1 and VX-2 are the newer models. People seem to feel that the VX-1 glass is as good as the VX-2 glass, and the price difference is not worth it. So for the Leupold, the VX-1 for approx. $300. Many people recommend Leupold for the excellent warranty. Is the toughness there?
The Redfield revolution is an option (made by Leupold?) that some people feel is a budget version of the primary Leupold product lines.
Burris seems to have a good following, with the Fullfield II Ballistic Plex being $250-300.
Nikon has the ProStaff that people feel is pretty good, but seems to need warranty work a fair amount (rings?).
Bushnell also has a good following, not as much as Leupold, with a certain amount of warranty work also. The Bushnell Elite 4200 Seems to be around the $300 range.
Alright guys, I would appreciate your input on essentially the best sub-$500 scope for a 30-06 that would meet the wish list. Please keep in mind that I would go to $500 with compelling reasons if it would make it really worthwhile. Also, some of you may not have had the same experience as what I have outlined above for specific scope brands, but I tried to get info from multiple sources and web site opinions and reviews.
Thank you for your time.
