So I got the savave 338 lapua HS out today. Now this is a used gun. 6.5-30 mildot B&L on it. Put the target out only 60 yds just to paper it. Had to move it 1.5 feet to the left and I've used all my up and can now just nick the base of the 8.5X 11 piece of paper, and I'm dead out of adjustment. I know I got to go up on rear or down on front, but how much and is shimming or machining best, cause I think I need quite a bit

Secondly I wish I could talk to the orig owner to ask just how the he11 he was hitting anything

My math says near .020 just to get center at 60 yds.

HOW IN THE WORLD WAS HE SHOOTING THIS????????????????????????????

Did you mount the scope yourself?? Just curious , if rings get torqued down incorrectly , the can put stress on the tube that can cause the mechanism to bind and not actually move.. Try loosening your rings , give the elevation knob a few taps with a rubber handle screw driver and try again..

Just a random thought ..
 
He likely wasn't and that's why he sold it. Other than the excessive cost of ammo(60 yards is a waste of the $8 per shot). I'd take the scope and mounts off and re-do the instal. You absolutely require a bore sighter as well. You may want to consider different bases, but look at the rings first. They have to be high enough so the front lens clears the barrel. And they should be a matched set.
 
It all came together. I can't get the one piece base off. The allen heads are so tight I know I'll snap one. When I got it All I did was check the torque on the rings, they were just spot on. The scope is reacting to knob turns. Just don't got enough turns

Space under what? the back of the rail where the screws go through will be thicker than the front where the screws go through
 
It's really not all that rare to find a new gun on which the barrel is so far out of alignment with the receiver that the discrepancy can be seen with the naked eye, looking down towards the top of the barrel from the rear. Any chance you got one of these gems? Or that the base mounting holes in the receiver are not drilled in line with the bore?

And what's a "quanrdy"?

Having the something-MOA base mounted backwards, if the holes even allowed that, would result in vertical displacement, not horizontal.

I think he did say he used all his up just to get to the edge of the paper and had move 1.5 to the left.

My bad, I missed that first time around. Bad enough when the misalignment is horizontal OR vertical...having BOTH out of whack is that much worse!

My perplexity and doubt must have blinded me. I'm familiar with the term, but that spelling was like an incomprehensible custom licence plate..."Huh? Whazzat?" :)

I didn't check actual thickness. I assumed, but given that it came from one of our two provinces (Well We won't go there) I should have looked. Cause I can just see one of them

I Got er dialed with a healthy 80+ MOA left. Just what I want. Kinda makes me wonder what else I'll find? How hard did he try to crank that scope up to zero? What was the black tar like substance in the neck area? Oh me is nervous

well it could be that the original owner had a different rail on it and put the factory one back on when he sold it. The factory one is aluminium I beleive so he might have put a steel one on it, and in haste put the factory one on to sell the rilf.
