Hey CGN,

I would like to scope my BRNO combo gun (.22HP over 12g). I am pretty new to scopes, have used a few optics and red dots are ARs but it wasn't me who bought/mounted them.

First off....30mm or 1"...which is better and why?

Secondly...what scope/s can withstand 12g buck or slug recoil?

Any brands I should look into? Any to AVOID? lol

Thanks,

- J

Considering the span of trajectories you are looking at with a 12 ga and a Hi-Power... You are going to want a compact low power zoom scope... Something like 1.25-5X or 1.5-6X... Mount it as close to the bore as possible, where it still gives you a comfortable sight picture. You should also consider a longer eye relief optic, something with at least 4", 4.5-5" would be even better... As far as brands and models... Most scopes in the $250-500 range are pretty safe bets. You don't need a 30mm tube, one inch is fine. A larger objective will allow more light transmission and "all else being equal" willl offer a brighter sight picture and usually (but not always) a wider field of view. Redfield, Leupold, Burris, Bushnell (only Trophy XLT or higher), etc... Make good riflescopes... Mueller is a company that makes probably the best low-end scopes out there, you get a lot of bang for your buck... Hawke also makes some good low-end optics... Knowing your budget would help a lot in recommendations.

I bought a 1pc mount with Weaver type rail from TradeEx. It's all steel and with good rings should be more than strong enough for my needs. Scope in pic is a Leupold 2.5x fixed, but was since replaced with a VXII 1x4. I think the smallest scope possible is the way to go with this type of rifle to keep weight down.

30mm vs 1" is typically a measure of how many internal mechanics they are trying to stuff in. Typically scopes with larger tubes (30mm) are trying to offer an advantage like more MOA adjustment, more zoom range, etc. In other cases it may just have been European made and that's the common tube size in Europe. In your case, a 1" tube would be more than adequate. Stick with the better brand names within your budget and get a good set of rings and you shouldn't have any issues.

Truthfully, objective lens size has no bearing on size of field of view.

It does indirectly... As focal length and prism orientation are the chief contributing factors... Which are "less critical" in the larger objective bell scopes... But that is why I said "but not always." At any rate we all seem to be on the same page with the recommendations. SuperCub, that set-up is exactly what I had in mind. .

Budget is $500-ish...I really like the new Zeiss TERRA line, especially the 2-7x32 model. They are all 1" tubes.

Cubby has all the nice toys... Damn... I'm a big redfield fan if you have a budget... Haven't looked lately but I think their smallest is a 2-7... Which would fit the bill imop...
