I am unfamiliar with modern rifle scopes, but want to buy a lower priced one for a grandson for his 30-06. Looking at Bushnel, lots of slightly different choices, apparently. Want 2 x 7 or 3 x 9. What is their best model and are they satisfactory? Would appreciate information from someone who has one of the newest models on a high powered rifle. Thank you. Bruce

Id spend at least $250 and buy a Bushnell Elite 3200, you can often find them for sale in used but good-great shape on the CGN EE for $190 or so

with bushnell stay away from the models wal-mart carrys "sportsmen, banner" cant speak for the banner but i have used and seen several sportsmen from wally world go kaputs in seconds

Bushnell 3200, or maybe a leupold rifleman, I know the 3200 will work on top of a 30-06, but I'm not as sure about the lower end leupold's. That my HO

Depends on you budget and how your grandson looks after his stuff. I would consider and older used Scopechief VI. I used these criteria to chose a scope for my 11 year old son. When he can prove he won't thrash a better scope he'll get one!!

The bushnell banners work well and I have used them on 30-06s, 270wsm, with good results, haven't had a failure yet. The 3200 is a better scope though and probably worth the extra cash.

The Scope

Thanks a lot for the information, guys, a lot of very good replys. I appreciate them. Actually, it was the Elite 3200 that I had picked out, but wanted to see what other people thought of them, before I bought one.
One of my first scopes was a Bushnel Scope Chief, 2.5. OK for hunting and in those years the lower powered ones were most popular. I still have the scope, but it developed paralax too bad to use. Doesn't seem to be anyway to take it out. My first variable was a Redfield, 2 x 7, the type where the reticule appeared larger as the power was increased! Then it gave trouble, I sent it to the factory in the states and they gave me a whale of a deal on a new one, direct from their factory in Colorado. My favourite for hunting is a Redfield 1 x 4. Wow, has that ever got a wide field of view at zero power, where it is perfect in the bush. We have had a couple of older Banners, one 2 x 8 was good, one shook loose. Haven't bought a new one for quite a few years, thus my request for info. Bruce

I have a Wally World Bushnell Sportview 3 x 9 wide angle for 5+ years now on my .30-06. Bought it and three more for $40.00 each! They were clearing them out at the end of the season to preapre for new stock. Clear as a bell, never an issue with any of them... and my gun drives tacks with it! But then again, I shoot Winchester 180 gr. Power Points too! According to most folks on here, "A real recipe for disaster!!!" Hehehe. (The deer harvested annually haven't noticed though!)

I agree, the 3200 is a real nice reliable option for you in that price range. As with any scope, tighten them down well and all will be fine.

I currently have a 3200 atop my 30-06...

great scope. I've even dropped it once and its stood up under recoil.

GREAT scope for the price!

I still think the best 'value' scope out there is the Mueller line. www.whitefalls.ca carries them. The 2-7 'shotgun-rifle' scope has done very well on my 30-06. The red dot is nice - but there's a black dot if the battery dies. The tac-2's are awesome.

Bushnell 3200 is ok, nothing wrong with it - but the tac 2 is far brighter and a better scope in my experience.

Over the years I've had quite a number of Bushnell's and even with the earlier models they served the purpose well, and on a couple of 'real kickers'. I had very few problems but those that I did have were attended to promptly and usually cost free by Bushnell. My Daughter & son in law just gave me a 3-9 Bushnell 3200 Elite that I'm planning on using on a custom 7x57 Mauser. It seems to be a pretty good scope. I don't think you can go far wrong with your choice of the 3200 Elite. Having said that, most of my scopes are Leupold and if you wanted to spend a few more 'bucks', something compareable by Leupold may be the answer.

For many years ,I used leupold scopes exclusively on all of my rifles. However the competition has improved much more than leupold recently, and now the other manufacturers produce scopes that offer more value for the price.I now use elite 3200s as my lower priced scopes and european scopes for hunting big game.I still own two leupolds, but I will not be buying any more unless they improve their value for the price.

My has both the 2x7,now, and the 3x9 Elite 3000. The 3000 doesn't have the Rainguard. The 3x9 is great scope for the money. The design compromises on the 2x7 don't work out so well. The view down the tube has a large black ring, like looking through a tire.So I would go with the 3x9.The same scope is sold inder the Browning name as well.
