Scope mount Base Screw size Size

I bought a used 6.5x55 built on a 98 Mauser action. Checking the scope base mounts I found that the screws were a smaller diameter than the holes in the bases. What are my options here?

The screws should pass freely through the base.

Options?
~ Leave it alone.
~ Replace the bases.
~ Drill the receiver holes to a larger size, one that matches the base.

~ What size screw is the receiver drilled for?
~ What size screws do you have?
~ What brand and model of scope bases do you have?
~ Do the bases appear to be altered?
~ Are the bases correct for that model of rifle?

The screws have to be smaller than the hole they go through... or they won't go through the hole.

Your best option is to take it all to a gunsmith.

Where was it drilled and tapped? It might be metric.

The next size up screw will also go through the base holes ! I am concerned about this being too much tolerance for a rigid mount. The head of the screws do seem to fit the countersink.

It is the head of the screws sitting in the countersunk area of the base that does the centering and holding jobs, not the threaded shank of the bolts. As long as you didn't accidentally get bases made for 8-40 screws, you'll be fine.
