Scope mounting a Mauser

Thanks for the info guys, I think you are right, I should'nt put the zrak on, starting to lean towards the high claw mounts. kinda pricey though,

joepup: It saddens and baffles me that there are still people out there taking collectable milsurps (especially Israeli Mausers!) and thinking that moddifing it in ANY way (the worst being a permanent mod like drill and tapping) IS A GOOD IDEA! You are taking a piece of history and destoying it. Buy an already d and t'd (ie: bubba'd) mauser and scope it! Leave that mauser alone! You should sell it to someone who can appreciate it since clearly you don't care.

Taking a milsurp then drill and tapping for a scope is the same as taking a classic muscle car and drilling the trunk to add a fibreglass spoiler. Makes no sense and you have ruined the value.

Oh, you say that the Nazi eagles have been defaced and it's been re barreled in 7.62?!?! On top of that there's stars of David on it? Well geez those Israelis ruined the value of that German Mauser!

Duh, you buy an Israeli Mauser BECAUSE of these facts. They themselves add to the history of the rifle.

You don't buy one with the mind set of " Oh it's already been Bubba'd by those Israeli fellows, so that makes it ok to Bubba it more!" Nope, that's not the case.

Seems like you're making excuses to justify you scoping this rifle. It's quite the opposite. The reasons you've listed justify leaving the rifle just the way it it.

Same argument goes for Russian Capture rifles. Is it ok to modify them because of the work that the Russians did on the rifles?

Guess it will make my un modified Israeli worth more in the future.

Well.....yeah, doing it properly is going to cost money. Anything less will be a cheesy abortion and it will look ridiculous.

If you are doing this because you simply must have a 98k "Sniper" then like I said, even though I'm against messing with it, it is your rifle.

However if you want to get serious use out of it, be aware that on all 98k snipers the glass sits rather high.
Observe the soldier in the following image, his mouth is above the stock.
http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Heer/Armyperiod/snipe.jpg You will find alot more wartime fotos like that. It is not the most comfortable setup.

For a good shooter with a mauser action you would be far better served by a CZ 550 than to start adding things on to this rifle as it was never designed to use a scope, it was done as an afterthought and will always be a compromise.

Unless you have aging eyes shooting a 98k with the irons is no problem out to 300m. I find that the majority of shooters are just not willing to put in the range time to become good shots with mauser sights, so they start bolting scopes to them. If you dislike the sights you can also look at replacing them with mojo peep sights http://www.mojosights.com/ again no permanent alteration to the rifle here.

My Mauser arrived today, condition is VG

I am very please with this purchase for under $500.00

And I don't think I can bring myself to tap and drill for the yugo mount, but maybe German repo

Wonder if I could solder on the zrak mounts? Anyone have any idea

That's definitely too nice to put zrack's on.

You've got some options.

1) sell the zrack mounts to fund your proper repro mounts. That's a good option because there are lots of M48 owners out there, and that's the right mount for them. I would do this. Plus, people will at least pay cost for an already done sniper with the right mounts. If you put the zracks on you know they'll pay the cost of the gun..... at best....

2) sell that gun and buy an M48. Your call.

WTF happened??? The last time I bought a mojosight was 2008 and they sent it to me.
Im getting really tired of this crap as it seems to be happening more and more now!! Here we are fighting a war together and they treat us like this!!?? Unreal!!

No you can not solder on the Zrak mounts. You have to use mounts that are designed for soldering and the only ones I know of are the Clawmounts.

Since I am considering this technique for my Gewehr 98 sniper clone, how would go about properly soldering the claw mounts onto the receiver and rear receiver bridge ?

(Sorry to hi-jack the thread)

Supposedly they used to sell to Canada, but new Govt. regulations forbids them which is highly unfortunate.

Currently searching for other suppliers...as there seem to be a few that stock mojo sights and will still ship to Canada.

Im thinking the rear click adjustable peep utilizing the stock front post is what I want, do you have experience with these? I don't feel like tinkering with the existing front post.

Might be just the trick for these weary eyes... I already have an SK scout mount on another mauser, which is good but they get quite heavy in this fashion and I enjoy the stock profile of a good solid K98.

Yes that exactly what I did with my yugo's, rear sight only and got the smallest aperture available. On a 98k they recommend you use both as the sights are low. It may work fine with a taller front sight blade but I have not tried this.
