What would be the best was to mount a scope on my 340 savage? I ve been told the scope would have to be side mounted? Is this the only way and why?
What are the draw backs of a side mount and if anyone has any pictures of them that would be great. :runaway:

The only other way to mount a scope to a 340 would be some sort of scout mount on the barrel, or fabricate a custom mount that bridges the receiver at the rear. A conventional 1 or 2 piece base setup will not work because of the bolt guide cutout in the rear receiver ring.

The Weaver side mount works quite well and allows you to use the iron sites.

Thanks. Whats hunting with a side mount scope like anyway? A buddie of mine is saying he thinks it would be awkward?
If he thinks it's awkward because the scope is offset to the side like the M1D, he is wrong. The Weaver base and mount place the scope over the center of the receiver just like any other mounting setup.

I had 2 model 340 a .30-.30 and a .222 both worked perfect with the side mounts. The only thing is if you want to be able to use the rifle sights to you will have to mount a scope with a 20mm tube

sorry for bringing back a old topic but i wonder if anyone could post a close up picture of there 340 witha side mount. I want to see how its mounted.I took mine to a gun smith and he said he would have to cut out a peice of the stock:eek: Im just worried how much he would have to cut?

i have scoped a half dozen 340's with a 1 piece base that centre mounts over the receiver. I have used 3 8-40 screws that attach to the front of the receiver and barrel to suspend a fairly heavily contoured modified weaver base over the action and on centre.

I have never had one returned with complaints of inaccuracy or broken scope either. i have done an enfield or 2 this way as well if the rear bridge had been ground off with similar decent results.

The stock might need to be relieved to clear the sidemount base. Not a problem if neatly done. The only issue that can arise is that the rings are quite close together, and this affects foreward and backward positionning of the scope. Look at Mudpuppy's photo, and you will see what I mean.
