last week i got a new scope for my 30-06 (an old remmy 700) to replace the loaner i have on it. it's a leupold VX-III 2.5-8x33mm. so when i tried to mount it the scope is so short that the front ring rides up onto the bell. i've got wever style mounts on there right now and i was wondering if there is some sort of base the will allow the rings to be put closer together

If you want to stay with "weaver" type rings they do make an "offset" ring for this application.

However for my money I'd go with a set of Talleys...only about 70 bucks a set, weigh only two ounces and should provide ample clearence for your compact scope.
Here's a couple sets on my 700's...

Also, Weaver makes a base that moves the front ring way back to the edge of the opening.

Ask for #40A
Here it is beside the standard #35

As Supercub states the easiest fix is to replace the #35 base with the #40A base. I've got the same set-up on most of my long action Rem 700's. I prefer Burris "Z" rings on the bases, too. Gives you a little more adjustment and a nicer look than the Weaver rings.

i think i'll order the tallys but i just want to make sure they'll fit, the rifle is a 70's or 80's adl i think.

A VXIII in weavers. I just threw up a little in my mouth. that poor scope!

I have the same scope, fits like a glove on my LA 700 with talley lows

Classic case of "scope mount snobyishness". :ninja:

Must make you sick alot, cuz the Weaver system is the most copied system out there. Weaver, Leupold, Burris, B-Square, Warne, Millet, etc etc all make their own version.

When I get my 375/338 done, my VXIII 1.75x6 will be going into a set of Leupold, all steel (weaver style) rings onto a set of Warne, all steel (weaver style) bases. I think it will work OK :)

maybe I read it wrong, i am thinking he used weaver brand rings? (uber gross)

warne rings are very nice. I have a set. but 4x the weight of the talley's and no stronger.

yes I am a scope snob, and that's ok :D

The old Weavers are good rings, but designed for steel tubed scopes. They damage aluminum scopes. :puke:

I think Weaver has addressed this problem by making the same basic ring with screws on both sides of the top instead on only one side and the hook on the other. Still ugly, but good solid rings and QD nontheless.

a 2.5-8 Vari or VX III in talleys on a long action 700 require the front basering to be turned back and even then you have just about zero adjustment for eye relief. Fortunately, the way it is it works for me. I had a 700 338 win mag with this scope/mount setup so I know from experience.

I would get Leupold bases with the front one an extension type, and add the Leupold rings (an offset front ring is also available, which will give plenty of room for eye relief adjustment) The added benefit of windage adjustment in the rear base makes sight-in a walk in the park. JMHO, Eagleye
