Scope Mounting Problem

I just bought an Remington Model 700 ADL in .25-06 and I installed Weaver bases on it but when I went to mount my Leupold VX1 2x7, the rings don't reach the bases. The front base is about 3/8" to 1/2" away from the maximum that I can slide the ring on the scope.

Any suggestions on what the best way is to fix this problem?

A picture might help in understanding your problem.

If I had to guess, it sounds like you have a SA base. Or you may require those funny looking extended/reversable bases made for short tubed scopes on LA rifles.

Does you front and or rear base need to be turned around?

I've used this Weaver combo with a 2x7 Leupold on 700 long actions with no problems. Should work.

Here some front bases I pulled out of the parts bin.

The one on the left is a #35 (same as yours). The one on the right is a front extension base #40A. It's the one you need and is alot better/cheeeeper than extension rings.

The middle base is a Warne all-steel base form Brownells. Weaver makes all-steel ones as well, but I've never had one, so can't comment on the slot placement.

What gives with those cheesy rings? Looks like the cheapo's that come free with the "made in China" junk scopes :rolleyes: Do yourself a favor and relegate those rings to .22 rimfire duty. Pick up a set of something at least halfway decent (even a set of $20 Weaver rings are better) Save yourself a headache & don't chimp out on the mount set up ;) :D
 
SC is giving good advice.
Weaver also makes as does B Square a picatinny rail type base, which is another good option.
Or you could move away from Weaver style all together and go with say Millett, Leupold, or Burris.
 
While I have no specific problem with Weaver bases and rings, I much prefer the Leupold system, and would simply put an extension base on the front, facing rearwards to solve that problem. Leupold rings are also a bit narrower than are weavers, giving just a little extra movement of the scope in the rings to get it back a bit further. Regards, Eagleye.

Supercub nailed it... The long action, and short action bases are a bit different...

I just bought a remington muzzleloader that had short action bases on it, but the owner wanted to keep em for his new remington :):):) :):)
I have a set of Leupold rings and bases for it...
So you still can :):):)
Option B, albiet more expensive is a set of burris zee rings.. they're much thinner, and I've had good luck with them in a few situations similar to yours when all you need is 1/8th to a half inch extra of play.
