Scope Question

Looking to retop my Browning A-Bolt in .280. The current scope (a Redfield 3-9) has taken a few knocks over the years and I've basically realized I just don't trust it anymore to be on target from hunt to hunt and am passing up longer shots that I wouldn't have when I first got the rifle and scope.

So what are the opinions out there on a good variable power scope for under $400.00. Not looking for fancy doodads and attachments but a solid and user friendly piece of equipment with good optics. My average shot is just over 100 yards but I have shot moose and deer out to 400 yards often enough to make it a regular occurence.

Staying under $400.00 - no doubt whatsoever, best scope is a Burris Fullfield II - 3x9. I have purchased several on eBay for $250.00 delivered. I also now have one in 4.5 - 14. They are well made, very clear, and take a pounding for my hot .338WM loads. IMHO, you should stay away from Tasco & Bushnell. :)
If you don't mind a trip to High River, I'll let you look through mine.

A Leupold VX-1 or Bushnell Elite 3200 would cost you well under 400 dollars tax in. Both are very dependable scopes.

Joe ##### - ### International - had a few 3-9 x 40 VX-2 on sale a couple of weeks ago for under 400. Joe is a Great guy to deal with and that price will be hard to beat.

I seem to be partial these days to Leupold because of their warranty. I'd second 'Boo's recommendation of the Leupold VXI for less than $400, or for $50 more than your $400 limit, a VX II.

I have had to send back a Burris Fullfield II 3-9 last year.... still waiting... not impressed! I have had my (much brighter) Leupold VX-I on my .338 my .300WM and it has been on several slugguns including my Pro-Hunter which kicks like a rabid Mule. I agree with the guys that give the VX-I the under 400 dollar thumbs up!

You'll never get an argument from me when it comes to the Leupold recommendations. I'm just not familiar with the VX-1, I own a VX-3. But hey, if the rest of the boyz say VX-1, then I'll go along with it. The Burris scopes have been good to me, sorry to hear about your problems there Bigredd. Waiting, and waiting just seems to be the norm with things that either go or come from south of the 49th. I hear many a good things about the Leupold fellow in Okotoks.

I am arguing.

My buddy has a VX 1, and he is a real jerk, and he even admits my Fullfield is brighter.

I own 3 Fullields, no issues at all.

under $400, look at the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40, or a Leupold VXI 3-9x40

Agreed except I would go with the Leupold. The bushnell elites are really nice scopes and I nearly bought one when I purchased the rifleman but look up some of the warranty nightmares with bushnell I decided my money should go to leupold. As mentioned I bought the rifleman and it is a great scope I have zero complaints better eye relief, lighter, mounts as low as any 3-9 on the market and still has te gold ring warranty. Some guys look down their noses at them but they are great scopes for the money and they are more than enough scope for 99.9% of the shooters here.

scope question

I have to agree with todd,I have a 4200 ELITE on my 280 a-bolt.Also on my 300wm.scope was full of snow, blew it out&made the shot.I'm still impressed ttyl.

+1 to that. And they are brighter than the VX-I's, according to my lightmeter.

Actually, I'd heartily recommend the FF-II as the best bang for your buck, beating out the VX-I and Elite 3200 series handily

scope question

agree with Todbartell deffinately a vx 1 3-9 , never sent a leupold back for repair. sent back a burris, nikon, baush laumb.but not leupold,i have learned my lesson, buy leupold.

Go with the Bushnell 4200 Elite 3x9 Lists at around $370 it is brighter than the Fullfield and VXII and on par with the VXIII for a lot less money. The rainguard feature is an added plus. As far as warranty issues go I don't know. I have 2 4200's and 1 3200 and they have been flawless.

Go with Leupold.

Burris and Bushnell warranties both suck the big one. As soon as you have problems with those two you will also be recomending something different to the next person that asks.

Just remember, when buying optics you get what you pay for...

Thing is ya don't have problems with the Bushnell. Seems this whole post has been about warranty and not about optics. If you Leupold owner's are so aware of warranties - you've had to use them more often. P.S. Leupolds cost to much.
