Scope recommendation for .17 HMR Savage

There are too many choices in the optics world!

However in the 300-400 dollars range, I think I'm going to go with a Hawke Optic. There seems to be great reception on them for the price tag. Whether I go with the Eclipse 30, Nite-eye (pretty tacticool), or varmint is another choice for me to make. All in 4-16 magnification.

What are you guys opinion as an option for getting the Bushnell trophy xlt 4-12x40 that I seen at my local wal mart for 200 dollars? It has the 600 DOA reticle. I can recall using one on a friend of a friend of mines 300 magnum. It was during dawn hours on a moose hunt and I remember it being very clear for the low light conditions. I think that's most likely the best scope I have looked through in person. So as you can tell, I'm fairly novice to optics. I have 9 firearms and the only one with an optic is my 93r17.

Thanks

Hey cover, I feel a little bad for high jacking your thread, so if your in the Regina area like half the people posting in this thread. I have a Hawk Varmint 4-16x44 you could check out and also 3 Vortex scopes as well.

You are more than welcome to check mine out too. I have the eclipse as well as some vortex optics. I could throw up a YouTube video if you wanted to see it as well.

I'm located in NL, a YouTube video would be great though! How do you like having a dot for the center of the crosshairs on the eclipseinstead of a fine line that the varmint has?

Ok I'll see if I can throw that up quick. I like both reticles. The dot is nice because it let's you easily focus on something. The fine cross hair is good for shooting longer distances I find but for a 17 hmr I don't think it would matter too much.

Yes that's right, I think the eclipse is worth the little bit extra money. The illuminated reticle must be nice for dusk and dawn conditions as well. I'm probably going to go with that if I can find one. Going to call the dealers tomorrow to see if anyone has it in stock. Curious though, what are your thoughts on the nite-eye hawke scopes? They seem to be similar to the eclipse?

I have virtually zero experience with them but I over looked them because they seem a little too techy for my liking. I've only shot at dusk with that scope a few times but the reticle was really nice. I don't think the night eye is very practical to be honest.

Thanks for the video! Between your review and others I am going to go with the eclipse 30. Now to find one lol.

I would see how long before dlairgun has them. Or shop around with some small vendors. There's also the place in Regina I told you about however they probably would not have it. I am not sure where titch got his as I don't know him yet. You could also try calling their head office in the states to try to get a list of Canadian retailers. That's maybe where I would start.
