Looking to scope my new to me .350 Rem Mag Ruger M77. What would you nutters recommend? Will be used primarily for bears in thick brush over bait but might try stalking as well.

Thinking longer eye relief and able to handle the magnum recoil. Wide field of view preferred and won't need a long reach. Thanks.

You can spend more on the VX-3 1.5-5 or 1.75-6, but the VX-2 2-7X33 will do just as well... it is good at 7X but excellent at 2X.

I'd be inclined to go with the 1.5-5x but they're pretty much my favourite hunting scope. Just the right amount of power in a trim, rugged package.

Don't get me wrong... the VX-3 1.5-5 and 1.75-6 are great scopes... I have them both on hunting rifles... the 1.5-5 on my Ruger No.1 .45/70 makes for just about a perfect tight to medium range package. Also have the 1.75-6X going on a Ruger M77 MKII RSI .30/06, zeroed with 200 gr Partitions, and a separate VX-2 3-9 zeroed for 165 IB's, both on QD mounts... this is set-up for a specific hunt. However of all the VX-1, VX-2 and VX-3 lines, I find the VX-2 2-7 and VX-2 3-9, to be particularly forgiving with "to-the-edge" brightness and clarity.

You'd be very hard pressed to beat either a straight 2.5X20 Compact (just recently discontinued, but readily available) or a 4x33 FXII. Either is a perfect fit for your rifle.

the compact seems still in production where did you hear that?

a fixed 4x with good eye relief and wide FOV and large exit pupil on my 700 Classic. Scope is mounted in EAW QD rings as in tight bush I find the iron sights fastest and just as good out to about 75yds

there is no need to go EAW for quick detach system ... steel weaver and steel quick rings works perfectly if you are going on a quick detach system.

i have heard good things on nikon 3 1-4x20 too with a german reticle.

What exactly are "quick rings"?

Those FXII 4x33 are excellent scopes and fast becoming my favourite. I have of them and another M8 4x33 matte.

Will be using Ruger rings. No iron sights on this M77 either so scoped its going to be. Anyone have experience with thhe Nikon 1-4x20mm? I believe it has a wider field of view than the Leupys.

I have a couple of old Weavers that I was thinking of pressing into service - a K1 and K4. The K1 has a reticle similar to a German #4 and sits on my .358 BLR now. Not sure if either would stand up to the .350 RM recoil though. Plus I want as much eye relief as possible.

I dont know about an older weaver ... but I have an old Scopechief 1.5-4.5 on a 7600 in 35 whelen that handles pretty heavy loads without a problem. Generally the ScopeChiefs have much brighter optics though and are a "little" lighter than steel tubed Weavers...
(come to think of it I dont think I have any large game hunting rifles without iron sights ...?)
