I just recently purchased a .458 Winchester Magnum bolt action rifle from another CGN'r and am looking for advise on a scope that will handle the recoil.
I have had good success with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-6x32 which was used on a Ruger # 1 chambered in .416 Rigby so I know from experience that will work. Are there other low power variable scopes which are known to handle heavy recoil?

Leupold scopes seem to have the edge when it comes to longer eye relief and quality throughout their product lineup.I've been using Leupold VX-2's and VX-3's on all my magnum rifles ( up to .416 Rigby ) and Bushnell Elite's on my most of my "standard" caliber rifles ( eye relief for Bushnell's run between 3 and 3.5 inches and the Leupold's averaging 3.75 to 4.4 inches ).

Not to be a fanboy and pile on but the VX3’s work for me.
I’ve experienced nothing but utter reliability, I can’t say that about some other name brands so on a hunting rifle mine have the gold ring pretty much exclusively.
JMO, YMMV.

I have a bushnell elite 2-7x32 on my 458wm. Its been flawless for about 1000 shots or so. 10 bottles of h4895 anyway. Good enough for 225 yard big game hunting and clear and brite enough for close shots in dark woods
