I am restoring a #4 Mk1 Enfield sporter to as close as original as I can. The barrel has been cut back about 1/4" so I figure I can take some liberty with style. I am making a "Poor Man's T clone just for informal shooting. I have a "No Drill Scope mount ordered and I need a scope. Anyone know of a pistol or rifle scope that would look OK on this rifle ? I don't want anything with a large objective lens and I don't have time to look for a vintage "Alaskan" so I was wondering about maybe a pistol scope ?

An old Weaver K2.5x or K3 has no objective end bell so it looks more like the actual scopes used on a No.4T (which were 2.5x) than a K4 does. And some of them have the post and crosshair reticle, like the real thing.

The above mentioned Weaver are good choices
It took awhile for me to find a nice Alaskan , but in the meantime a small collection began to grow of other Lyman 2.5 / 3x All American or Perma-Center scopes , that were top of the line hunting scopes back in the day.
I also use a 2.5x Ruko thats a nice trustworthy scope and also Norman-Ford scopes.

Put an add up in the EE and find some gunshows if you can.

Re: Scope Recommendations

Howdy,

You might want to consider doubling up on your scope rings (basicaly having 2 sets) when you mount your scope. This is especially so when you are using it for hunting purposes in thick bush where it may get bumped around a little while hunting for big game (bear, deer, moose, elk, caribou). It will save you endless amounts of $$$ on ammo, range fees, gunsmithing fees, etc. in re-sighting in your scope. I know it's over kill but it works.

My now ex-brother-in-law has done this on his Sporterized Lee-Enfield for hunting Black Bear, Whitetail Deer and Moose in New Brunswick's thick bush several years ago; and still does so today while now living in Barrie, Ont.

He uses a Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 4-12x50 with adjustable front objective lens on Weaver base and rings (x2 foward and aft of the adjustment knobs). This set up managed him to bring down the N.B. Provincal Record Black Bear (500 + pounds) six or seven years ago. Using various loads and bullet wieghts, the recoil doesn't bother the scope's zero either.

I hope this helps.

I have been using an old Bushnell Banner on mine, 4x, with the singlecross-hair and post reticle. It is VERY fast to get onto a target with.

You can find these around for $35 to $50, used and they WORK. Not original, but within most of the limitations of the original. "Close enough for jazz," my musician friends would say.
