Alright so I have a bit of a pickle here, I have an m1a and im trying to mount a scope on her. shes got a utg tri rail on and a smaller rail that fits into the dove tail. Im not sure if they are lined up but i think they are pretty close. i know thats important but i figured id get some of the bigger questions out of the way first.
first things first i had some scope rings (one inch high i think) on it but they werent tall enough and the front part of the scope was making contact with the rail causing the front end of the scope to be pointed to the sky. it wasnt very noticeable which leads me to believe that a set of scope rings one size larger would do.

i also dont really know much about my scope, i think its a bushnell legend. and i know even less about scope rings, im not even sure if they were one inch high or if thats even a size. i just have a vague memory of the gun smith saying what size they were when i brought the gun in to the store near my house a few months ago. he said he would order me a set and call me when they were in and i never heard anything and infact this is the third seperate time that gun shop has done that so ive decided to order it myself but i thought i would ask you guys first.

so my question is what size scope rings should i be looking for?

I personally go with the lowest ones I can find, simply because the scope mount is so damn tall a 60MOA adjust puts me 3 inches low at 100 yards.

Yeah low as you can get....but I do have a set of railed 1 inch see through rings if you want.

They are 30mm though but I do have shims for them to work with a 1in scope.

They run TOO high on an M14 unless you have a cheek riser.

Also if the small stripper clip rail is crooked I have a UTG scope mount I can sell ya too......but the UTG rail uses the side mounting spot that the mount requires and simply won't fit on the front either together...but something to think about.

PM for details and a pic if you want.

i dont have a normal m14 "C mount" or what ever they are called. the kind that sits over the ejection port. i have two rails that line up. the problem here is that i went with the smallest rings i could get and they happened to be too small. thanks ABCZAR but im not really interested in see through scope rings.

I'm a lover of the Millett Angle-Loc rings, many people swear at them, and I swear BY them. I've won several gold medals at the national level with them and I ain't complaining. :D

In the meantime, the other practical reason I use them lots is the fact that they run around $ 35 to $ 45 and I keep a few pairs in various sizes around (read: spare parts) the tool box. I really love 30mm diam tube scopes and all my rings are in that size. Often I will have a spare pair of 1" diameter kicking around for friends and their emergencies like: Hey, Barney, I've got a match this coming weekend and my current scope crapped out on me. I have a spare 30mm tube scope, but no rings...

So with that in mind... buy a LOW pair and a Medium height pair, go from there. Experiment a bit and see what works out. You will surprise yourself with this approach. After all, this won't be the last scope/rifle/mount you will be buying. :D

Keep spares for backups! One never knows in this competition game...

Cheers and I hope this saves your tail feathers....

Barney

I read on a post that the UTG tri rail had issues lining up horizontally with the stripper clip mount , I believe they said it was higher at the back mount .

I took Hungrys and Tacticall 111 advice and went with the low Millett angle locs on my arms 18 mount and really like them. They are windage adjustable .
