I need some advise for scope selection for my Tikka Battue Lite in .308. I bought it as a "brush" gun, something can walk with in the bush for hours and enjoy its light weight, and still be able take anything I want to take in Ontario in dense brush. I went with the iron sights (and this rifle has awesome sights) and the 20" barrel for that reason. But my eyes are not great, and I want to be able to do take good close range shots as well as longer range one. I also don't have a crazy budget any longer like to used to do in the past (need to buy food and pay the bills, can't do that all with the guns "legally"). So, I started thinking of buying a shotgun/muzzleloader scope, something with 1-4 magnification so I can do quick handing as well as take some longer range shots. .308 out of a 20" barrel will do well beyond 400 yards, and a 1-4 scope is quick handling at 1x and reasonable for use on medium to large game at 400 yards. Having said that, I don't think I would ever use this at a distance of over 100 yards on any game.
So, I was thinking about the Leupold VX-1 Shotgun/Muzzleloader 1-4x20mm HD scope. I can still keep the iron sights.
Now, I know a true brush rifle should be a semi or one with a fast action (such as lever action or pump). I know the bolt action is the slowest one to operate. But I really like this rifle and I think with a 4x magnification it is more than a brush rifle for deer and black bear.
Can a shotgun/muzzleloader scope be used for a .308 light weight rifle (and not damage the scope)? Or should I go with an AR style scope, such as the Leupold Scope Mark AR MOD 1 1.5-4x20mm scope?
