Scope selection for my .308 Tikka Battue Lite

I need some advise for scope selection for my Tikka Battue Lite in .308. I bought it as a "brush" gun, something can walk with in the bush for hours and enjoy its light weight, and still be able take anything I want to take in Ontario in dense brush. I went with the iron sights (and this rifle has awesome sights) and the 20" barrel for that reason. But my eyes are not great, and I want to be able to do take good close range shots as well as longer range one. I also don't have a crazy budget any longer like to used to do in the past (need to buy food and pay the bills, can't do that all with the guns "legally"). So, I started thinking of buying a shotgun/muzzleloader scope, something with 1-4 magnification so I can do quick handing as well as take some longer range shots. .308 out of a 20" barrel will do well beyond 400 yards, and a 1-4 scope is quick handling at 1x and reasonable for use on medium to large game at 400 yards. Having said that, I don't think I would ever use this at a distance of over 100 yards on any game.

So, I was thinking about the Leupold VX-1 Shotgun/Muzzleloader 1-4x20mm HD scope. I can still keep the iron sights.

Now, I know a true brush rifle should be a semi or one with a fast action (such as lever action or pump). I know the bolt action is the slowest one to operate. But I really like this rifle and I think with a 4x magnification it is more than a brush rifle for deer and black bear.

Can a shotgun/muzzleloader scope be used for a .308 light weight rifle (and not damage the scope)? Or should I go with an AR style scope, such as the Leupold Scope Mark AR MOD 1 1.5-4x20mm scope?

It is a great scope the 1-4x shotgun muzzleloader scope. The heavy duplex is fantastic for thick brush. If you want to check one out, I'm in Pickering and we can mount it to your gun to see if you like the feel etc.

For what its worth: I wear progressives, and a cheap Bushnell Trophy red dot goes on my older Tikka 308 in the bush, and Leupold VX-II 1-4x20 in more open areas. Each one is on their own QD mount, zeroed in for that rifle; With each scope, I can go to irons in three seconds flat if needed.

I bought the VX-II used, so it didn't break the bank. It is definitely better quality of the two, and brighter and lighter in weight, but the red dot is better and quicker to use with eyeglasses on (mounted a bit forward, and used with both eyes open.)

Thank you. I think I am going with the shotgun muzzleloader scope option. I think it will be great, so no need to trouble you. I'll mount it this weekend and take it to Silverdale.

I love the trijicon tr24 but it is a bit pricy for me (given I spent lots for this season already). I may end up getting it next year, and will then put the 1-4x shotgun muzzleloader scope on a muzzleloader I'll probably buy in a year or so ;-)

Ok man no worries, where did you pick one up? If you haven't grabbed one yet and the scope is out of stock pm me and my offer still stands. Enjoy. I really regret selling my battue. I think I may need to lighten my collection a bit and pick another one up.

I hope you feel better and get out hunting soon. If the store doesn't have any in stock I have an extra one that came off a rifle I just sold.

Let me know if you are in a pinch.

The Leupold Ultimate Slam is available with a Firedot reticule which I believe has 75 yard parallax. I am waiting for a Sako Black Bear in 308 to replace the same in 3006 and will be using a Leupold AR Mod 1 3-9 with the Firedot reticule on it. The same scope is also available 1.5-4

Solid choice. 1-4x Leupold would have been my first choice in your situation, or a 1.5-5x (my personal favourite).

I use a 2-7x Vortex Viper on my T3 Battue with Warne QD rings. Nice combo and let's me take off the scope for "iron sight" practice.

Good luck with your choice.
