This scope is for a Remington 700 SPS or a Stevens 200 in .223. Im leaning heavily towards the SPS though. Id like it for shooting in the 100-200yard range with maybe some 300+ stuff if I can. This is a first scope that I will purchase other than rimfire stuff and Im not a huge money guy, Im el cheapo totally.
Id rather have a mil dot sight than anything else but to be honest I dont know much about the differences between reticles. I do understand that the mil dots and such have the bullet drop compensator which is a lot nicer than what Ive had to do with the standard scopes Ive had where you just had to guesstimate hold over. So Im also leaning towards something that has the bullet drop already on the scope itself.

Here are the links and some of the info on the scopes Ive been looking at. Basically the price range would be below $200 taxes in and preferably including rings, but not necessarily.

Marstars 4-16x50 Mildot for $149.95
- this come with rings so thats cool, but does anyone know anything about them? Do they hold zero well?

Bushnell Banner 6-24x 40 Mildot for $169.99
- a bit more expensive and also its a 6 power to start out with, as I plan on doing plinking mostly what would this do if I wanted to shoot 50 yards? Would it be too much power close up? Would I really need all 24 power settings for a .223 for accuracy?

Simmons ProHunter 4-12x40 AO reticle for $139.99
6-18x40 AO reticle for $154.99
ProSport 4-12x40 AO reticle for $139.99

- not a bad price really. Quality any good on these? Ive never really heard of them so I have no clue really. What would be the main differences between the power settings as concerns range? Differences between the Hunter and Sport versions?

Tasco 4-16x40 AO Reticle for $94.99
varmint 4-16x50 30/30 reticle for $109.99
6x24x42 mildot reticle for $109.99

- Yes I know Tasco is the bottom of the barrel but its SOOO cheap. :D Am I getting simply what Im paying for? Is it worth spending a few more bucks on the others for my needs? Will they hold zero over time? Im looking more at the Varmint versions and again do I need 24 power even though its a mildot reticle? Anyone have one that can comment on these?

Btw all of these scopes are for sale and priced through the Russels catalogue in Calgary heres the link. And if anyone knows of any of these cheaper, especailly locally in Van or has some used let me know as well. ;)

Any other comments or other scope recommendations would be great , thanx guys ;)

Get yourself a Burris Fullfield 11 off Ebay. You will pay less than $200 shipped to Canada for a 3x9x40 with the ballistic plex reticle. I paid less than $350 delivered for a 4.5x14.42, it's a very nice scope. Very good value for the money. I would buy none of the scopes you listed above.

In the main, Cheap scopes = frustration and unreliability.

You do not scrimp and cheap out when buying optics.

Pretty tough when that shot of a lifetime comes on an animal and you scope hasn't held it's zero or fogs up.

IMHO, your scope should be at least half of what your rifle is worth or more.

Out of the ones you have listed, the Bushnell Banner would be the cheapest scope I would buy.

My advice is to buck up to around the $300.00 mark for optics.

SKBY.

+1. Also consider a used Bushnell 3200. I would rather buy quality used than a new turd.

Don't get Bushnell Banner it's like looking through an empty beer glass that you just finished off. Unless you’re ONLY using it on a rimfire, defiantly don’t get one.

You also don’t need a variable scope that goes up to 24 power, yes it’s nice to have that option but it will most likely never be used. Think how rock steady you would have to hold your rifle and how every little movement is magnified at that power setting.

IMHO anything past about 20 power is unnecessary and even that is a little high.

If I were you I would seriously consider the Bushnell Legend 5-15 X 40 with mildot. Yes it is more expensive but you get a substantially better scope than the Bushnell Banner.
Wholesale Sports Lists it at $220 in their catalog.

I can’t really say anything about the other scopes other that I’d probably stay away from the Tasco based on the quality of the scope.
