Scope setup question

I am having trouble getting a rifle to shoot consistent groups. I first had a knock off leupold scope that worked decent for about 40 shoots then couldn't hit the side of a barn. Now I have a nice vortex 2-7x32 on it. And first shot hits dead on then the next four are about a 10 in group. Then I reload again first shot dead on then the next four are about a 10 in group. Has anyone experienced this before. Any input and advice is appreciated. Thanks guys

After you've done what Gairlochian said, do you have a know proven-good scope you can switch over to?

Remember, just change 1 thing at a time to narrow down the problem.

After eliminating the scope, rings & bases (including ensuring the scope base screws are not too long & hitting the barrel threads), start looking at your rifle.

Are you letting it cool down between shots? Is it a mild calibre or a boomer? I can go 10-12 shots in my Hornet before I can detect any barrel heating, unlike a pencil thin .30-06 barrel, or a .30-30 that start tossing shots after 3 in a row. No longer have a small calibre magnum rifle, but when I did, anything more than 2 shots out of my .308 Norma would open up a group & heat its barrel.

Can you slip a sheet of paper around the barrel & move it from just behind the tip back to ~1" or so in front of the receiver? Even better, is there any rubbing against 1 side of the barrel channel?

Has your barrel/action ever been bedded or replaced in a different stock?

Is it a new or new-to-you rifle, or have you never had this problem before with this rifle?

There are a whole lot of things that can go wrong!

Thanks guys I will recheck the mounting and go from there.

It is a new rifle. I will recheck the mounting then test fire. Then if not I will go down your list jamesharrison.

make sure that when your shooting you have good eye relief and that the rifle barrel is resting on the stock when you shoot and not on a wooden block or anything for that matter.

It's an sks receiver with a surplus Swedish Mauser barrel rechambered to 6.5 Grendel. Trying to sight in it at 100 yards. I rechecked the scope and mount retorqued everything. I put it in a Dragonuv stock bedded it in. I noticed at the front of the stock it was touching the barrel slightly so I sanded it.

So hoping to hit the range soon to try it out.

Yep! Sounds exactly like you have a mounting problem since both scopes exhibit the same problem.

Ted

A less popular opinion is that he may have a carbon-interface problem. If a scope is going to toss shots all over it will do it all the time. If one shot lands well and it scatters shots everywhere I'm having a hard time blaming the scope, mounts, or rifle.

Oh sweet Jesus Christ on his throne! Really?

Weaver rings and a cast scope mount that mounts to the side of the receiver. Feels solid to me.

So I just wanted to clarify. First shoot hits center. Next four shots spread about 10 inches. Then without touching the scope or anything load 5 more rounds. First shot hits center then next four spread.

I am thinking it's a barrel harmonic issue. I hope the clearances I corrected on the stock help the consistency. I am not expecting a five shot one hole group. Even if I get a consistent 5 inch group I'd be satisfied. This is my stay busy scamdemic project. And I have had a lot of fun with it so far.

Sounds like a bedding problem if it's walking the shots consistently in one direction.

Maybe large groups are as good as it gets with it as it is.
