I'va always been a pistol guy.

The MK22 is my first rifle and was looking for some red-dot or scope suggestions ? (Just shooting short range from 30-80 yds for now but i want to be able to see the holes in the paper or whatever the target may be without using a big spotting scope) would 4X do ?

I just bought a mossberg tactical .22 and are in the same boat!
I was thinking red dot, even asked about it on the forum. However I went to my friend who is the manager for bass pro hunting. He said go with a scope not red dot. The red dot will cover up too much of the target. The red dot scope itself will cover up even more of the target.
Go with a good scope, spend the money and you won't regret it.
I can take everything he's told me so far, to the bank, so I trust him when he says get a scope.
Just my two cents,
Now I need to find a tactical scope I like...............

I was leaning towards a scope. My air rifle has a 4X40 on it. Maybe something similar would do ?

I started with a bushnell 3x9 30mm scope on my savage but upgraded to a tasco 6x24 42mm scope. Wanting to shoot over 100 yds with a 1 inch group, upgraded again to a tasco 10x40 50mm scope with a 3x optics booster.
The bushnell is now on my tactical. I'm so use to a larger opj lens that I'd like to find a tactical scope with the same obj lens.
If I were you, I'd try a few stores and see if you like anything.

Anybody else have scope suggestions ? Looking for something cheap around $100 that will work from 20-80 yds.

futong's website has some cheap (price and quality, should be ok for 22's) china made scopes, as low as $30 if you wanna gamble it.
Edit: looks like the discount code is gone and it's just a flat discounted price now.

I got a NC star SM3R251040G (2.5-10x) scope on my 10/22 that works pretty good. probably work the same for you. it was less then $100 after tax and shipping too.

I've been looking at hi lux/leatherwood 1x50 red dot scope. Really like the size but has no magnification.
Some of the small scopes have a 2x add on, like NCStar but from what I've read most people don't bother with it.
Another idea would be open sights and a green laser?
Just an idea.......

Just ordered an Illuminated 3-9X40 from Futong (Fitco). For $40 I thought I could give it a try since it's just a 22 rifle.

I went with the Bushnell Banner 1-4x. It was cheap and gives me the option of a sight that has super fast aquisition at 1x or more zoom / precision if I need to. I doubted I would need anything past 4x with a .22. Very happy so far

Anybody using a ACOG style scope with their 22 that they could recommend. I like those Elcan C79 from the black rifle optics thread, but I am just getting a mossberg tac 22. The real ones are wayyy expensive/overkill. There are some knock-offs on ebay for 80 bucks. Just want something thats got that really big feild of view, maybe a bit of magnification. Read elseware that NC star ones are junk, but would they be ok for plinking or still asking for trouble?

I've been using the Bushnell Trophy red dot.
It has 11 intensity levels and 2 sizes of dots , the smaller being the more accurate.
Very durable , I've had this sight on a Lee Enfield Jungle carbine , SKS ( as shown below and my Mossy 400g 12ga. turkey gun
They come up on the EE occasionally with decent prices.
Depends alot on how you shoot . If your looking for the best groups or decent accuracy when your multi tapping the trigger...which is where the Mossy Tact really comes through.
