Hey Guys,
I have a Savage Predator in .243 that I am looking to put a scope on. I will use this for hunting but 90% of the time will be spent at the range shooting out to 500 - 600 yds.
I have a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x40 with a B&C reticle on it now but with no parallax adjustment or turrets to dial, it seems lacking for long range precision. I don't want to go over 5 for bottom end magnification as I still use this to hunt with. I am on a bit of a budget, as I would like to stay under $1000. Also what reticle would be best for this combination of hunting/target application?

Thanks , Matt

STAC 2.5-17.5X56 LRMOA or LRMH. I would go with the LRMOA but many want MRAD clicks. Whatever works for you.

At 2.5X, I can aim at a door knob 20ft away. At 17.5X, I can see the surface details on a brick chimney 800yds away.

I doubt you will find a better scope that covers all your needs AND has superb optics, and mechanicals. Orig designed for the UK predator hunting at night. Low light useage is outstanding.

A bit higher then your budget but you will get a scope that will blow you away.

Send me a PM or email.

Thanks

Jerry

OP, do you plan to use the rifle stand-hunting whitetails out East here? If so you'll definitely need the low power range like Jerry suggested. If not then you could go up a little more in power. Where do you go to access a 500-600m range? I only know of the range at Bull Meadows. Not hacking, I'd seriously like to know.

How would you compare the quality of this new stac to the s3 for glass clarity and overal function. I love the magnification range while still being useable for a hunting application. Thanks Adam

Glass is superb. And you have that quality through the full mag range. The STAC and SIII share similar qualities for optics and mechanicals.

The only caveat is if you need a low mount scope ... forget it. The bell is quite large but for applications where you have a taller comb anyways, it works very nicely. The key is the need to target at longer distances. The 17.5X is ideal.

Can't think of a better tree stand scope over looking a field or clear cut.

If the need was heavy to standard/short hunting distances with maybe the odd mid range shot, SIII1-7x24 or the 3.5-10X44 is better.

Regardless, nothing in this price range in consumer scopes will come close to the optics these scopes offer.

Well jerry just on my honeymoon in Germany ATM. (Have to make sure the wife doesn't see this) haha. But when I get back to outside of the world in mid July I'll shoot you a msg. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for the input so far guys. It is Bull Meadow that I would shoot 500-600 at Big Ugly. Also the only hunting I would be doing with this rifle would be calling coyotes in fields or large clearcuts.

Just Google-Mapped Cow Bay. Wouldn't have suspected that neck of the woods to be very good "clearcut" country. Then again, this isn't the hugest province in the Dominion.
