What scopes should I be looking at for this little babe? I've never had to buy a scope before, as the rimfires I've had experience with each came with one.

Stainless or black doesn't really sway me too much, more bang for the buck, I'll be using the rifle for rabbits, grouse (I've only taken shots under 75 yards or less while hunting) and beating the pants of my bud's for a long shot grouping!! So, a good variance in distance would be an asset.

Thanks for your input in advance.

Well, how much do you want to spend? There are $50 rimfire scopes that are adequate at best and there are quality scopes that cost $$$. My personal suggestion would be a Bushnell 3200 series, either the 3-9x40 (around $240) or the 5-15x50AO (around $420), with the 3-9 more hunting oriented and the 5-15 more precision oriented.

For rabbits and grouse in the bush you are going to want low power to avoid the tunnel vision of high magnification and not being able to locate your target. But for long shots at stationary targets, whether its gophers or bottle caps at 100 yards, you are going to want higher magnification. You have conflicting interest that are going to require a compromise. Something like 4.5-14 or 5-15 or even better a high end scope that has even wider range like a Bushnell 6500 2.5 to 16 or 4.5 to 30.

I stuck a 6-24x Tasco on mine. Works great. I got it for cheap so I figured what the heck. I was going to put a Leupold or Bushnell on it, but the Tasco is good enough. The only drawback I found it that I was hunting in some darker areas and the higher powers don't work out the best. But I just turned down the power and went right back on hunting.

I concur....a Tasco 6x24 seems the best for mid and long range shooting. I use this scope on my .22 gopher gun and shoot out to 200 yards. Closer, I turn it down to 7. Have the matching scope for my .223 for further work.

i have a bushnell 3200 3x9 on my BTV, and think it is only really good for 50m and less. i concur with the above posters in that if you want to shoot 100m and further, you would benefit from higher power scopes...

My Savage BV wears a Tasco 6-24 as well, cheap and good range of mag.

6X in the gopher patch, 16-18X when trying to shoot a good group.

If I had $700 for a scope on it I think a Busy 6500 2.5-16X42 would make a great scope on it.

I ended up throwing a Bushnell 6-12x Banner Dusk on mt BTVS and have been very happy with it. Image stays clear through the magnification range, no issues with fogging etc and appears to be of strong construction.

Which model of Tasco 6-24x40 are you guys using? Russell's lists both a 6-24x40 VT with a 30/30 recticle and a 6-24x42 VT Mil-Dot model for $105.

I am about to buy one of these as a decent budget scope for a CIL 310, hopefully it doesn't disappoint. I have a Tasco 3-9x32 rimfire scope and it is OK for plinking and very little more. Eye relief at 9x is terrible and extemely sensitive to head position.

Thanks,
Mark

I pretty new at scopes, so this was all good info.

There's no chance in hell I'm spending over $200 though!! Maybe if I was getting paid to snipe... but I am not.

Don't ever look through a good quality scope then. They are visibly better and will make you spend far more than you think is reasonable to get that performance on your own rifle.

I'd never spend UNDER $200, and then only if it was a killer used deal.
Not dealing with a crap scope is worth a hell of a lot more than $200 to me.

There seems to be a bit of a tendancy to treat rimfires like red-haired stepchildren and that means they often wear the crappy scopes. I think that is a mistake and I now have the elite 3200 Tactical 5x15x50 on my Savage Mk II BV. The scope wasn't bought for the rifle but ended up there as things got reorganised. I have to say it works real well and my days of putting junk glass on rimfires is over.

Bushnell Rimfire

I have the same rifle, I bought a $50.00 Bushnell rimfire scope on it and it works great! That rifle is awesome, almost boring to shoot it is so accurate. And BTW I found a scope that was silver so it matched the Stainless finish.

I have the VT.

Got a pair of Bushnell Banner 4-12 x 40 AO.

Works well on my CZ 452 Varmint and Style. Cost about 150.00 in 2002, I believe you can get them for less these days.

You can get decent and cheaper adjustable objective variables at Walmart for less than a hundred.

i've got the same rifle and i decided to buy a Bushnell Trophy 4-12AO for $210.00 from Russell's in Calgary. The Trophy is in between the Bushnell Banner and 3200 in price, but the most important reason for its purchase was....the ADJUSTABLE OBJECTIVE lens. I can clearly focus the scope at almost every power level from 10 yds - 150yds+ and every distance in between. I found this to be important especially with rimfires because of the typical disctances you'd normally be shooting is less than 100yds. Most out of the box fixed objective scopes are set with either a 50yd or 100yd paralax. This makes impossible to focus your lens at higher magnifications at closer ranges.

It might be a little more than you're willing to spend, but might be worth the extra few dollars. Its also quite capable on higher powered rifles if you want to put it on a different gun in the future.
