scope too big?

Got an irrefuseable deal on a near new bushnell 6-24X50mmAOE scope, is this overkill when it comes to medium ranged (around 100 yards) deer hunting? My 3-9 works perfectly, never had any issues, but like i said, i couldnt say no to the price i got.
 
I'd stick with the 3-9 for your mid-range deer application. Now you need to get a 22-250 or something along those lines to fit under that 6-24x50mm. Same thing happened to me, bought the orphan scope, then needed a suitable rig for it.

Don't you know "6" comes between 3 and 9? What are you, an engineer?:p

ROTFLMAO thats great :p i no hahahaha but still on six power its hard to see a full animal in the scope at close range.

gitrdun has given you very fine advice. You now have a good and valid reason to buy another rifle.

I know guys that use fixed six power scopes on their deer rifles and they are happy with them. I would not want that to be my LOWEST magnification available, but I hunt areas where your hundred yards would be quite a LONG shot.

You may also discover that the large objective bell means that you need to put super high rings on your rifle, which can cause you to lift your cheek above the stock to get a good sight picture. The usual results of lifting your cheek off the stock are reduced accuracy and a rifle that smacks you in the cheekbone.............

What kind of Bushnell scope is it and how much did you pay.... we need details for crying out loud!:confused:

on my old 22 i had a fixed 6x and i never had any problems finding moving squirells or rabbits with it at closer ranges so you should be ok. one thing you have to consider though is a scope like that will weigh quite a bit more than your average deer scope;)
 
I have no problems woith a fixed 6, and havee uused a fixed 10 with good results at 30 paces in the tress.
You may have a git of a problem if you shoot with one eye closed however.
Two eyes open lets you aquire the target in the scope qickly in any power range.

The question will be how high the mounts need to be to have the front lens clear the barrel. If they get to high it can cause problems when cheeking the rifle. I know a fellow who went to a 50 MM scope and his accuracy went south because his head was to high off the stock.
 
On average a 6X scope will give you 15 - 20 feet field of view at 100 yds.
You take that back to 50 yards you have an average of 7.5 - 10 feet, if that deer is moving you are going to be pretty hard pressed to find it for a quick shot.
Any closer than 50 yards and you are pretty much S.O.L.

Will it work yes.....is it ideal NO, you are better off with the 3 X 9.
