Hi Folks,

Got myself a Marlin Dark in 45-70.

Wondering about which optic to put on the top for deer and bear hunting in brush. Not expecting to make a shot much more than 100 yards, 200 MAX, and even that is likely not going to happen.

Budget is $500 max.

If a scope, what power range would you be looking at?

Thanks!

Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x20 & a set of 1" rings would be well under your budget or a VX-3i 1.5-5x20 alone.
The VX-Freedom Line runs VX-2 Glass, for the price you cannot go wrong

I don't have experience with scout scopes. With their 9" eye relief, does that mean the scope must be 9" away, or are they a bit more lenient than normal scopes?

Leupold 2.5X IER.

Fixed power not more than 4x. Having said that, I have a variable (Weaver Classic V3 - 1-3x20mm) mounted on the receiver of my Marlin 1894 which I would carry in close country with shots not expected to be taken much over 100m, leaving the magnification at 2x. (I shoot with both eyes open.)

I have the same rifle and put a vortex strike eagle 1-6 power for the best of all worlds. In hunt camp I keep it on 1 power for a quick sighting on bears and usually on 4 power when I'm out walking. Several hundred rounds of shoulder killers and its still perfect.

I have the same gun. I put a holosun 510c on it. It's a prism sight so astigmatism doesn't give me an issue. When you move your head behind the optic, the red dot stays on target. I love the setup, but would not be confident shooting past 100yrds.

I've got a Leupold 1.5-5 scope on a Marlin 1895M. Wonderful scope and they come up on the EE frequently in your price range. I keep it at 3X mostly but have used it at 5X for some 200 yard shooting.
