A Scope does not improve the mechanical accuracy of the firearm it just helps reduce aiming error of the shooter.
2 to 3 MOA is common with the 858. Chec surplus shoots very well out of it. This is a pic of groups of different loads, the first is a hornady 155 grain amax. (a target bullet, but only for a 308 not 310) the second is surplus, the bottom two are cast. All shot at 100 yards. The group for the surplus and the premium reload are about the same two inches if you lop off the flyer. This was done with stock sights not a scope.

5 rds. at a 100 yds with wolf ammo - czech surplus is about the same with the odd flyer. 1 inch groups are the norm for me with optics and an 858 non chrome barrel. I use a bubble level on the forend.

Fine groups for irons, much better than I can do. I'd go home crying if I got groups like that with a scoped rifle. A scope helps remove the biggest fault in the human factor. I honestly can't even see with my bare eyes, a circle that is 1 inch big at 100 yards. Let alone expect reasonably to put 5 rounds into that 1 inch circle. With a magnification scope, I can see very clearly, the slightest movement or adjustment of the rifle. My 858 is a deer rifle, so I use the irons and don't worry too much about being bench accurate. If I wanted the ultimate mechanical accuracy, I'd be running a scope for sure.
You can get MOA if you sort the milsurp ammo by overall length off the ogive, and shoot the same length bullets together - It gets rid of the flyers -
Sorting takes less time than rolling.
I have sometimes shot half inch with sorted ammo - It would be nice to roll match ammo that shot half inch all the time.
Shoot it beside someone with a $5000 sniper rifle and watch their face when the see your targets LOL !
Try an aimpoint with an aimpoint magnifier on a hangaurd rail. Works good and you don't need more than 3 or 4 times maginification for this round in my mind any way. But some people have there POSP scope on this platform witch also seems good except for the fact that you have to drill and tap the reciever.

That's pretty impressive shooting for that type military rifle. All I need to do is try and justify another rifle. It's getting harder to do all the time
