Well first off I'll say that I am a complete newbie when it comes to owning guns so if this is a serious doorknob question let me know.:slap:

Anyway. I'll be getting my licence in a month of so and one of my first purchases will be a Lee-Enfield No1mkIII SMLE. This rifle has family significance and I partly want it as a keepsake. But mostly I want to actually use it, becuase whats the fun in having a beautiful rifle like that collect dust in a cabinet? One of the uses will be hunting and so I wondering; can you install a scope on this rifle without modifying it?

Thanks

There are scout mounts which will require you to remove the rear site. However, there is no drilling and tapping involved, so converting back is fairly easy. There is also these guys. I bought an S&K mount for my No4.

"...want to actually use it..." Check the headspace before you shoot it.
None of the aftermarket 'no gunsmithing' scope mounts work terribly well. Like berger says, most of 'em require removing the rear sight. No. 1's don't really take to scope mounting well. They were never intended to have one.

Agreed with the aboves.

Drilled and tapped Enfield are easy to find - and cheap. My advice: don't try to mount a scope on an intact Mk3 unless it's the only rifle around and you must mount a scope on it. And please, don't dril and tap one...

Really, these are cheap rifles, so having two or three is achievable. Then you have one for each occasion :)

I'm sure Lou could hook you up with a sportered one with a scope mounted on it already thanks to our friend "Bubba", and he can also find one a full wood one too!

No problem DWA!

Very possible :)

I personnaly try to find them untapped, but I know there's one member who recently acquired quite a few sporterized, he may post a few soon in the EE section; not sure if there are some tapped. They do come up fairly regularly in the EE section.

Hmmm,

It seems more logical, like you guys said, to just buy a sporterized one as well. Might as well, there not very expensive to begin with.

that would be my advice, get one already set up with the scope mount and then if you want add the wood to give it that more military less bubba look. drilled recievers do not cost more then a non drilled reciever, for the most part its the other way around.

you may even get a nice old scope out of the deal for nothing :)

Ok, then i'll ask another possible doorknob question... What price range would I be looking at for a respectable scope? and what would you suggest?

I believe there is a mount for a "scout" scope for the No1. (the Elmer Keith thingy where you put a long eye relief scope part way down the barrel, and other than removing the sight ladder, nothing irreversible is done.

I have a bushnell elite 3200 fixed 10X on one of my rifles, it has the tactical knobs on it so it's so easy to adjust, and the mildots make aiming easy. I really like it, and for $250 I don't think there's a better scope.
Leupolds are better, but cost so much more I can't part with that kind of money to put it on a $120 rifle, but that's just me.

B-Square makes a receiver mount for the No1 , however it required some "fitting" to make it secure enough to trust. It's still a somewhat bulky mount tho. ( " Fitting" was done to the mount only)
There's a few good scopes that won't cost alot.
Nothing wrong whatsoever with a Bushnell and I've made very good use out of Ruko scopes, all of which hold well and are plenty tough enough for huntin' hard.
I've picked up 2 types of Lyman scopes lately which are reputedly to be built like a tank.
