Far as the action goes, I guess I like knowing how far I actually have to throw the lever to make it cycle, for example. Can't even do that at the aforementioned big box store. Makes sense that the effort level will change as parts wear in.
I do find the Winchester more aesthetically pleasing, and found it nicely 'pointable', but then, I think the Marlin is more practical in that it's still in production, pistol grip is nice, easier to clean, better should I want a scope on it. But I do agree that in my planned use, iron sights and lever action would be more appropriate. But if someone's giving me a scope for free.... hard to decline.
