Scoped Marlin 336W is 499.99- why buy used?

Hmmm....lot of...um.... colourful comments! : )

Far as the action goes, I guess I like knowing how far I actually have to throw the lever to make it cycle, for example. Can't even do that at the aforementioned big box store. Makes sense that the effort level will change as parts wear in.

I do find the Winchester more aesthetically pleasing, and found it nicely 'pointable', but then, I think the Marlin is more practical in that it's still in production, pistol grip is nice, easier to clean, better should I want a scope on it. But I do agree that in my planned use, iron sights and lever action would be more appropriate. But if someone's giving me a scope for free.... hard to decline.

Thanks!

In the last year I've bought (zero) "new" Marlins and four "used" ones:p

Just one reason to buy used vs new.........the Oldies don't have that Fugly crossbolt safety on them ;)

Here I am at my pickiest best!
Peep sights ARE iron sights. Sights come down to two classes, iron or glass.
That sight near the rear of the barrel, that rifles often come equipped with, is an "open" sight.
When a shooting match is advertised as, "Iron sights only," it still means, of course, that aperature sights can be used.
There, I told you I was going to be picky!

Put down the rum & eggnog.... :p

There's a difference between a "C" and a "W", with the "W" having inferior quality wood. I paid less than $500 for a "C" a little over a year ago. With the exchange rate, coupled with reduced demand in the US, prices should go down in the new year. I'd wait.

Don't have a burning need for it right at the moment, so I think I will wait. The aforementioned big box store apparently frequently has promotions... or maybe the right used one will come along. Thanks for the suggestion!

I own both Marlin and Winchester lever guns. In a fair shoot-off, the Marlins consistently beat the Winchesters in terms of pure accuracy. I'm not the only guy who has confirmed this either. That said, I love 'em both!:) You won't be disappointed with the new Marlin. Can't ask for a more practical big game bush gun at an affordable price. It might not have all the bells and whistles, but at the end of the day it will get the job done.
